CALABASAS HISTORY PROJECT

To better share our past, the Calabasas Library created a website at www.calabasashistory.org. With 200 photos and more added often, this special website gives everyone a great glimpse into our interesting past.  You can access the website from home, but there is a dedicated computer in the Library, where you can access the website, as well.

A true treasure trove of local history is currently being uncovered. Part of the Calabasas Historical Collection are 75 letters written in fountain pen from the late 1800’s. It’s interesting to note that the strength of the ink comes and goes on some of the letters as the writer had to keep dipping her pen into an inkwell. We have a summer volunteer who will be reading and indexing these letters so we’ll know exactly what is and who is mentioned in all the correspondence.  Stay tuned for more on these letters.

Please share your old photos with us - If you have historic photos or items related to Calabasas or surrounding communities, please contact Library Archivist Brian Rooney at archives@calabasaslibrary.org or 818-224-1757 so that he can scan your items for our archives and return them to you.

BOOK REVIEW: One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware

Looking for a beach read that’s a page turner?  Look no further than One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware. Lyla is in a bit of a rut. Her post-doctoral research has fizzled out and she's pretty sure they won't extend her contract. Her boyfriend, Nico, an aspiring actor, is also in a rut. When the opportunity arises for Nico to join the cast of a new reality TV show, he persuades Lyla to try out with him. After a whirlwind audition, Lyla find herself whisked off to a tropical paradise with Nico, boating through the Indian Ocean towards Ever After Island, where the two of them will compete against four other couples to win a cash prize. What could go wrong?  Everything. After the first challenge leaves everyone rattled and angry, an overnight storm takes matters from bad to worse. Cut off from the mainland by miles of ocean, deprived of their phones, and unable to contact the crew that brought them there, the group must band together for survival. Lyla finds that this game show is all too real--and the stakes are life or death. Warning—don’t read right before bed.  You’ll want to stay up all night to find out what happens.  The Library has this title in adult fiction.

MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD

PXL_20240316_1918144821For the past two years the Library has had two wonderful volunteers keeping our bookstore neat and in order. Now, our adult volunteer, Lynda Abdo is leaving to spend more time on her art work. Sky, our student volunteer will be off to start college in the fall.  We so appreciate both volunteers and will miss them greatly.

Volunteers are an essential asset to the smooth running of the Library.  Student volunteers help us with Summer Reading programs and sit on the Teen Library Council, an advisory board.  Student volunteers have to be at least 13 years old and going into high school. The adult volunteer group, the Friends of the Calabasas Library, raise funds for children’s programs and special collections.

Right now, we are looking for adult volunteers to take over the book store maintenance and to join the Friends Board of Directors.  They’ll also need help with a large book sale in August. The Friends meet on Zoom quarterly and are having an in-person annual meeting in the fall.

For more information or to volunteer please email volunteers@calabasaslibrary.
