CALABASAS HISTORY PROJECT
To better share our past, the Calabasas Library created a website at www.calabasashistory.org. With 200 photos and more added often, this special website gives everyone a great glimpse into our interesting past. You can access the website from home, but there is a dedicated computer in the Library where you can access the website, as well.
Is the real name of our fair city actually “Calabozo”? In the early days of Calabasas, fist fights were known to break out in the dirt streets over small disagreements and that warranted the placement of a small two-cell jail. “Calabozo” is a Spanish word for “jail” and we know that our local jail was in Old Town next to where Pedaler’s Fork restaurant is today. Did early, pre-city boosters divert our burg’s name to “Calabasas” to avoid association with an unseemly part of civil society? Could be!
Please share your old photos with us - If you have historic photos or items related to Calabasas or surrounding communities, please contact Library Archivist Brian Rooney at archives@calabasaslibrary.org or 818-224-1757 so that he can scan your items for our archives and return them to you.

LIBRARY TIP OF THE MONTH: CLOUD LIBRARY APP
The Library has the Cloud Library app for e-books, e-audiobooks, magazines and comics. Anyone with a Calabasas Library card in good standing can access thousands of titles.
The Cloud Library app has been updated. It is now green and white without the distinctive CL in red and white as before. When you update your app, it will automatically change over and there is nothing else you need to do. Just remember to find the new logo on your devices! The library website and information will be changing in the next few weeks.
If you need any help with digital services, email Karilyn Steward at ksteward@calabasaslibrary.org.
BOOK REVIEW - DISQUIET BY JULIA LEIGH
MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD
The past few weeks have been a traumatic time for our neighbors in the Altadena, Palisades and Malibu Fire areas. We were lucky to escape the fires although the Kenneth Fire came dangerously close.
Unfortunately, due to the high winds, many people in our city did not have power for several days. The area surrounding the Library and City Hall did not lose power so we were able to keep the Library open for regular hours. For the first few days, the Library was busy as people sought light, warmth and power outlets. Southern California Edison (SCE) hosted a resource center in the Founders Hall with additional power sources, emergency supplies and snacks. The Library also provided books, crayons and coloring sheets to keep children there busy.
City staff members were amazing as they opened the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) almost immediately upon the start of the winds. They monitored the situation 24/7 with people working shifts from 9am to 9pm and then 9pm to 9am. Many had little sleep and rarely saw their families. When the Kenneth Fire started they were on high alert.
Remembering the Woolsey Fire, we quickly and smoothly evacuated the Library. Thank you to all the patrons who swiftly complied with the order. Luckily, the fire was extinguished and we were able to open again the next day.
Even during the Woolsey Fire and COVID closures, the Library continued to provide information and resources to the public. Always check our social media for the latest news during an emergency.
That’s all for this month.
