CALIFORNIA NEW DAYLIGHTING LAW (AB 413)

California Assembly Bill 413, also known as the “Daylighting Law,” goes into effect statewide at the start of next year. This new law prohibits the stopping, standing, or parking of a vehicle within 20 feet of the vehicle approach side of any marked or unmarked crosswalk. This new law helps increase the visibility of pedestrians and bicyclists entering the crosswalk. These rules will apply whether or not the curb is painted red, similar to the 15 foot clear law for fire hydrants. The figure below shows how the 20 feet no parking zones for marked and unmarked crosswalks would apply.

AB 413 was signed into law on October 10, 2023, and full enforcement becomes effective January 1, 2025.

City staff is evaluating intersections throughout the city to prioritize locations for initial red curb painting near schools, parks, bus stops, and other high-pedestrian areas.

DO NOT FEED WILDLIFE: PROTECT YOUR COMMUNITY AND OUR WILDLIFE

Feeding wildlife, including rodents, encourages dangerous human-wildlife conflicts. When animals become dependent on human-provided food, they lose their natural fear of humans, increasing the likelihood of aggressive encounters. This practice also attracts more wildlife into inhabited areas, exacerbating issues like rodent overpopulation and increasing the risks associated with larger predators, such as coyotes, bears, and mountain lions.

For the benefit of both wildlife and public safety, the following behavior is encouraged:

  • Do not leave food outside that can attract wildlife.
  • Educate your community about the dangers of feeding wildlife and the importance of keeping our neighborhoods safe.
  • Do not keep pets off-leash or unattended while outside, especially during evening hours.
