After more than a decade of planning and coordination, Craftsman’s Corner is officially becoming part of the City of Calabasas following approval of the annexation by the Los Angeles County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) on Aug. 17.

The milestone formally welcomes Craftsman’s Corner residents, property owners and businesses into a community they have long been geographically and socially connected to. Many already identify Calabasas as home, and annexation now gives residents a direct relationship with City government and greater opportunities to participate in local programs, information and decision-making.

“We are excited at the prospect of annexing Craftsman’s Corner to the City of Calabasas,” said Calabasas Mayor James R. Bozajian. “Los Angeles County wrongfully excluded this area from the City’s initial incorporation in 1991. We had made several attempts in the last 35 years to rectify this mistake, and we are relieved that adding this historic district to the City of Calabasas has finally come to pass.”

The annexation concludes a 12-year process involving the City, Los Angeles County, LAFCO, property owners and other stakeholders. The City Council formally initiated the current annexation process in December 2013.

Craftsman’s Corner is a landlocked area of approximately one-quarter square mile located between Calabasas and Hidden Hills. The LAFCO action involves a three-way reorganization of territory, with the majority of Craftsman’s Corner joining Calabasas and a smaller portion of the area annexing to the City of Hidden Hills.

For residents and businesses, many everyday services will remain the same. Law enforcement will continue to be provided by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and fire protection will continue through the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Schools, utilities, waste hauling, existing addresses and postal service will also remain unchanged.

While many everyday services remain the same, Craftsman’s Corner residents are now part of Calabasas local government. Residents will be able to participate in City elections, public hearings and local decision-making and access City programs, information and services. Planning and land-use decisions for the annexed area will also transition from Los Angeles County to the City of Calabasas.

The City has created a dedicated online resource to help Craftsman’s Corner residents, property owners and businesses learn more about the transition and find answers to frequently asked questions. Property owners and businesses with permits or projects currently in process with Los Angeles County are encouraged to contact the Calabasas Community Development Department at (818) 224-1600 with questions about their specific situation.
