BOOK OF THE MONTH: READY PLAYER ONE

For readers who are not into Science Fiction, the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline may change your mind. Fun, fast paced and suspenseful, the story encompasses the world of virtual reality. Readers may not pick up on all of the references of 1980’s pop culture or novels, but you will be thoroughly engaged and understand enough. You will also definitely be rooting for the good kids and booing the bad guys. Armada is another title by Cline which is a bit more Sci-Fi and not as fun, but still worth the escapism. These books are available at the Library.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN, BARBARA LOCKWOOD

When I meet new people and tell them I’m a librarian they will sometimes say, “Nobody goes to the Library anymore.” Well, tell that to the 155,000 people who visited our Library last year. People come to check out books, attend programs and study. I’m often amazed at the many twenty somethings who spend hours at the library. A recent Pew Research report said that Millennials are more likely to have visited a public library in the past year than any other adult generation. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/06/21/millennials-are-the-most-likely-generation-of-americans-to-use-public-libraries/.

The Library held almost 500 programs last year with about 12,000 people attending. The Friday story time was so popular that we added another baby story time on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. We enjoy collaborating with other groups such as the Friends of the Library and the Calabasas-Las Virgenes Historical Society to co-sponsor programs at the Library. The Friends’ Great Gatsby dance and the Valentines Tea were great fun. The Historical Society’s lectures on movie making in Calabasas and the St. Francis Dam disaster (just to name a few) were fascinating.

Of course, we also have a lot of people who just run in for the latest bestseller or to check out a few movies for the weekend. Library staff members are always happy to help with any recommendations and hope we provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our community.
