PET PARTNERS: READ WITH ME

Is your child's reading going to the dogs? Let's hope so! Bring your new and emerging reader (grades K-3) to the Library on Saturday, June 3, to share in a unique reading program. Therapy dogs, trained through Pet Partners, will sit (or lie!) and listen while your child experiences the joy of reading aloud. Each child will have 15 minutes to read. Sign-ups begin at 11:00 a.m. and the program runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

BOOK OF THE MONTH: SIXTY: A DIARY OF MY SIXTY-FIRST YEAR: THE BEGINNING OF THE END OR THE END OF THE BEGINNING

Ian Brown, author of Sixty: A Diary of my Sixty-First Year: The Beginning of the End or The End of the Beginning, is a journalist and author who has won three of Canada’s most prestigious awards. In his deeply personal and hilarious journey to become an old man, he describes the physical, mental and emotional changes he sees and feels and can’t quite reconcile it with being sixty. Yes, there are memory lapses and the body can’t do what it used to do, but there is also a social invisibility that is frustrating. He is an avid and intelligent reader so we are grateful he shares his insights into all the authors he reads. This is a delightful and humorous look at the daily life of a man who makes our own journey a little less frightening.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN. BARBARA LOCKWOOD

We are excited about a new service for our patrons. The Calabasas Library recently added an e-book Interlibrary Loan lending program to the Cloud Library platform. The “Cloudlink” service lets our patrons borrow e-books and downloadable audio books from the collections of Huntington Beach, Ontario City and San Diego City Libraries. The service is seamlessly integrated with our catalog and the Cloud Library app so the books appear available with no additional effort.

Our patrons get first priority for our collection. Our collection only appears on the other libraries’ catalogs if not checked out or on hold for our patrons. Our current e-book stock is 2,229 but with the Cloudlink service our patrons have access to over 10,000 items. For example, the Calabasas Library bought two e-book copies of The Gentleman in Moscow but our catalog shows 11 e-book copies available for checkout. Many more titles are available if you download directly from the app.

The Ventura County Library System is slated to join in the summer. As more libraries participate, we’ll have access to even more items.

From more information on the Cloud Library e-book collection and other digital products, visit the Library’s E-Media page - www.cityofcalabasas.com/library/emedia.html.
