SUMMER READING PROGRAM

The Calabasas Library’s Summer Reading Program “Reading by Design” is coming to a close this month, so make sure you join us for our final event before it's over!

On Wednesday, August 2, Michael Rayner will be performing the "Found Objects Juggling Show!" Watch as he juggles everything from a wheel barrow on his chin to a cheeseburger on an umbrella! The show begins at 4:00 p.m. and is geared towards K-5th graders.

All readers who participated in the program need to be sure to turn in reading logs and tickets no later than 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 8! If you or your child participated in the program, we ask that you please take a moment to fill out this survey before Thursday, August 10. This gives us information about our programs and patrons so we receive more funds and grants from the State Library in the future. This is completely anonymous.

The Calabasas Library's Summer Program is sponsored by the Friends of the Calabasas Library, Calabasas-Las Virgenes Historical Society, SusieCakes, Rosti Tuscan Kitchen, Legoland and the Aquarium of the Pacific. For more information, visit www.cityofcalabasas.com/events/library/summer-reading-program2017.html.

LIBRARY TIP OF THE MONTH: SOME OF OUR DIGITAL PRODUCTS HAVE CHANGED NAMES

Some of our digital products have changed names! OneClickdigital is now RB Digital and Zinio Magazines is now RB Digital Magazines. It is completely seamless and your log in works as before. In fact, if you had one log in, it now works for ALL the digital products by RB Digital, including Comics Plus and InstantFlix Streaming Movies. Please see our revamped e-media page for more information. It’s easier than ever! But if you need help, email Karilyn Steward at ksteward@cityofcalabasas.com.

BOOK OF THE MONTH: THE SWEETNESS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PIE

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (first in the series) by Alan Bradley: 1950's post World War II England is the playground of Flavia Sabina de Luce, an 11 year old chemical prodigy extraordinaire. From the family mansion, Flavia excels at the craft of poisons and solving crimes. Humor mixed with true peril introduce this witty, award winning adult series wherein the reader finds a little history, a little mystery, and a protagonist with a huge heart.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY LIBRARIAN. BARBARA LOCKWOOD

I love summer at the Library. Along with the city parks and Senior Center, the library is a community gathering place offering respite from the heat, with myriad programs and hidden treasures to find in the stacks. Our Wednesday shows bring a buzz to the library. Parents and kids doing the limbo during the One World Rhythm or helping Abbit the Average perform magic. Numbers being called out and hearing someone yell Bingo! Eating yummy (and healthy?) chocolate desserts from Chef Steph’s cooking demonstration. With crafts, Legos, edible architecture, book clubs, movies, lectures and story times it’s impossible to be bored. But, if you insist on quiet we do have the quiet reading room.

Summer is the time to ditch those textbooks and pick up a fantasy or romance novel. What is better that being at the ocean, toes in the sand reading the latest Grisham or Danielle Steel book? I’ve been gorging on a diet of thrillers; Final girls by Riley Sager, The passenger by Lisa Lutz, Deadly force by Jonathan Shapiro and anything by Karin Fossum.

Heading for vacation? No more lugging books in your suitcase. Download several free e-books or RB Digital Magazines on your digital device. Download the Mango Language app to your phone and learn the language of your destination. Check out an audio book for your long car ride.

Next month, back to work and school, but you can still have some fun. Look for our September calendar to see what’s up at the Library.
