of the fire and temperature and wind speed and direction are being
closely monitored.
2/8/06
9:30 a.m
30 acres have burned-
the fire is still being contained in the Latigo Canyon bowl on
National Park Service land. For the most part there are
no visible flames and the fire is just smoldering right now but
three spot fires have broken out. There is concern about what
the hot sun and winds might do later in the day to fuel the fire -
around 11am they should have a better picture.
The clearest
description of the fire location is NW of Castro Peak Way on Corral
Canyon. Essentially half way between Agoura Hills and PCH.
There are 50 homes
down Latigo Canyon toward PCH that may be in the fire's path if
spot fires take off. There are no evacuations in place, but
homeowners have been notified.
All public schools in
Malibu are closed. No word on private schools.
Road closures remain at Kanan at Latigo and PCH at Latigo.
2/8/06
8:25 am
The
fire is holding at 25 acres - it is currently in a "bowl" at
Latigo Canyon and firefighters should have a better
determination by about 10:00 a.m. if they can contain it in that
area.
Chief Reginald Lee is the incident commander.
The fire
originated on national park land from an SUV fire.
The incident
command center is Fire Station 71 at Point Dume on PCH it will
be moving to the Malibu Civic Center later this morning.
There are 15
- 18 structures in Latigo Canyon that are being voluntarily
evacuated. Horses and large animals are also being evacuated
from the area.
Most Malibu
schools are closed for the day - Western, Point Dume and Cabrillo
Elementary and Malibu High School
Road Closures
- Latigo Canyon at PCH and Latigo Canyon at Kanan.
The steep
terrain is making fighting the fire difficult to fight-
helicopters, dozers and hand crews are doing much of the work
since engines cant get into the area.
