Definition:
Under the direction of the pre-school teachers and
the Preschool Supervisor, the teachers’ aide’s primary responsibility
is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children. The aide
encourages social, emotional and intellectual development.
Essential Job Duties:
The following tasks are essential for this
position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of
these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

Enhances children’s play with language, toys and
activities.

Respects and observes children’s interests.

Intervenes when needed to maintain classroom
atmosphere.

Communicates daily with the Preschool Supervisor.

Acts as a role model for the children.

Acknowledges feelings with sensitivity and
demonstrates appropriate expression of emotions.

Is attentive, flexible and supportive of children
and their families

Demonstrates good communication skills in dealing
with parents.

Is responsible for working with the teachers to
maintain a pleasant classroom.

Shares ideas with teachers.

Attends meetings and helps to create special
occasions and programs for the children.

Interacts continuously with the children.

Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
Knowledge of:

Teaching methods and procedures.

English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Skill and Ability to:
Training and Experience:
Each teachers’ aide is required to have a minimum of 6 Early
Childhood Educational Units, and be currently enrolled in a child
development class; experience is preferred.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Special Requirements:
First Aid and CPR certified and Livescan fingerprinting.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Requires vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.
- Requires mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to
grasp and manipulate small objects. Lower body mobility may not be
required.
- Requires ability to perform lifting, pushing and/or pulling
which does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the
job.
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
- May be required to work at a video display terminal for
prolonged periods.
