CARLS GIBBS ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENT: WENDI GLADSTONE

Congratulations to our Winner: The winner has been announced! Congratulations to Wendi Gladstone for being the recipient of the 2016 Carl Gibbs Environmental Excellence Award. Gladstone was recognized for her commitment to protect the environment through environmental science programs in schools, surveying the Calabasas Lake wildlife, and educating public on the protection of wildlife habitat. She was presented the award during the February 7, 2017 meeting of the Calabasas Environmental Commission.

About the Award: The Carl Gibbs Environmental Excellence Award is a symbol of commitment to California’s environment. The award honors a wide array of individuals, businesses, municipalities, government agencies, organizations, institutions, all working to benefit our environment. The Award recognizes voluntary activities by companies and organizations, big or small, private or non-profit, for work done in the City of Calabasas and in surrounding communities that result in cleaner air or water, less waste, less traffic, conservation of energy and natural resources, efficient and water conserving landscaping, or reduced use of hazardous materials, etc. Furthermore, the Award honors those organizations that demonstrate exceptional commitment or innovation above and beyond their primary mission.

SIGN UP FOR CERT CLASSES

CERT classes are underway but it's not too late to sign up and get involved. The County of Los Angeles Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training was developed through FEMA to provide basic fire safety and life saving skills. Following a major disaster, police, fire and medical professionals may not be able to meet the demand for emergency medical attention. Residents and neighbors may need to rely upon one another to help with immediate life saving needs, particularly in isolated neighborhoods that may be cut off from the main roads. The CERT classes will teach you how to prepare and respond in these scenarios.

Classes are held at the Calabasas Founders Hall (behind the library) on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., now through April 6, 2017. There is no charge for the classes but all sessions must be attended in order to receive a certificate of completion. If you need to miss a class, that class can be made up at a later time.

To register, call (818) 224-1620 or sign up online at www.fire.lacounty.gov/cert.

EXHIBITORS WANTED FOR EARTH DAY CELEBRATION/GREEN EXPO

The City of Calabasas Earth Day Celebration/Green Expo will take place on Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Las Virgenes Creek site on Agoura Rd. (behind the Starbucks at 26531 Agoura Road) in Calabasas. The City of Calabasas invites public agencies, non-profit organization and private companies that provide green services or products to participate in this event. Each exhibitor will be provided with one 6-foot long table to set up educational and promotional materials. A large turnout of Calabasas residents are expected for this event; more than 2,000 people visited the last year’s Earth Day Celebration/Green Expo. This is a great opportunity to educate the public on benefits of being “green”, on sustainability, energy conservation, and ways they can help the environment.

Over fifty exhibitors from all over Los Angeles County and Ventura County will be participating in the event to help attendees take actions that will save them money through efficiency while protecting our planet. The festival is free of charge and the Calabasas Earth Day event will have something of interest for everyone. The festival will also feature numerous children’s activities to teach kids about the environment while they have fun.

Calabasas Earth Day/Green Expo was created to be a day of education, celebration, and action for the natural world in which we live. On April 22, 1970, Earth Day marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Calabasas Earth Day/Green Expo sets a clear example for people and businesses how simple lifestyle changes can make a difference.

For more information or to become an exhibitor at this event, please contact Alex Farassati at (818) 224-1680 or at afarassati@cityofcalabasas.com
