ROBERT YALDA NAMED ENGINEER OF THE YEAR

The National Engineers Week Foundation’s Ventura and Santa Barbara county chapters have named City of Calabasas Public Works Director Robert Yalda as Engineer of the Year. Yalda, who has served with Calabasas for over twenty years, has played a key role in the renovation of Old Town, restoration of a section of creek bed between the 101 Freeway and Agoura Road, the designing of a new footbridge near A.E. Wright Middle School, and the implementation of the Mulholland Highway Master Plan. The award recognizes Yalda’s efforts to improve the local environment and enhance traffic flow and safety throughout Calabasas. Under Yalda’s guidance, Calabasas has also won two consecutive America in Bloom awards for its landscaping and overall beauty.

“Robert’s ongoing efforts and dedication to Calabasas have helped make our City into a great place to live and work,” said Calabasas Mayor David J. Shapiro. “We couldn’t be more proud of him and his many accomplishments.”

Yalda began working for Calabasas in 1994 as manager of the transportation and intergovernmental affairs department before being promoted to director of a newly established traffic and transportation department. In 2006, Yalda became the City’s Director of Public Works.

PUBLIC WORKSHOP TO DISCUSS THE CREATION OF A COMMERCIAL AUTO RETAIL ZONE ALONG CALABASAS ROAD

On March 12, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, the Planning Commission will hold a public workshop to discuss the creation of a new zoning district tailored to existing and future uses in the area, with an emphasis on auto-related retail and service uses. Over time, the study area (Calabasas Road between Parkway Calabasas and Mureau Road) has evolved into an automobile-focused area with multiple retail dealerships, an automobile fuel and spa service, and an upcoming classic auto retail-museum. Up to this point, new auto-related uses have been inserted into the area one development at a time without consistent zoning and development standards that support such uses. This workshop serves to collect ideas and input from the community with the goal of creating a uniform set of policies, goals and standards supportive of auto-related businesses while balancing the community’s high level design, environmental, safety, and public welfare standards. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and provide their comments. Questions in advance of the workshop can be directed at staff member Glenn Michitsch at (818) 224-1600.

RATTLESNAKE AVOIDANCE TRAINING FOR DOGS

Did you know that 15,000 dogs may be bitten by poisonous snakes every year? 70-80% of bites are to a dog's face and head, indicating it was investigating a snake, While domestic dogs do not know the danger of poisonous snakes, they can be taught to associate the smell of live rattlesnakes with negative correction. A dog's avoidance behavior will also help alert owners to the danger as well.

Mountains Restoration Trust is offering a Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for dogs on Saturday, March 21 at Headwaters Corner, 3815 Old Topanga Canyon Road in Calabasas. Individual training by High on Kennels takes approximately 20 minutes per dog. Methods used are safe and humane to both dogs and rattlesnakes. Space is limited and reservations are required. The cost is $75 per dog and proceeds benefit environmental education programs, restoration, and acquisition of parklands and trails. To register, visit www.mountainstrust.org or call (818) 591-1701.

CERT TRAINING IN CALABASAS

Do you know what to do following an earthquake or other emergency? Police, fire, and medical professionals may not be able to meet the demand for emergency medical attention. Residents and neighbors may need to rely upon one another to help with immediate life saving needs.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

CERT training begins Thursday, March 19 and will be taught by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Classes run for eight weeks, each Thursday until May 7. The class is held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Calabasas Library Founders Hall. All sessions must be attended in order to receive a certificate of completion. However, missed classes can be made up at a later date. There is no charge to take the classes.

To register, visit www.fire.lacounty.gov/cert (scroll to the Calabasas listing and click "register") or call (818) 224-1620.
