CERT TRAINING OFFERED IN 2014

Following a major disaster, emergency personnel may not be able to meet all demands for assistance. People may have to rely on each other to meet immediate life saving and life sustaining needs, particularly in isolated neighborhoods that may be cut off from the main roads for a period of time. The County of Los Angeles Fire Department’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program was developed to provide basic training in safety and life saving skills for the general public.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department will be offering CERT Training classes in Calabasas on Wednesday evenings (6:30p.m. – 9:00p.m.) from January 22, 2014 to March 12, 2014. All classes will be held at the Founders Hall at the Calabasas Library (200 Civic Center Way). This free CERT training is open to all interested community members.

Participants must attend all classes in order to receive a certificate of completion. If you need to miss a particular class for any reason, that class can be made up at a later time. To register. call Debbie Larson at (818) 224-1620 or visit www.fire.lacounty.gov/cert (scroll to Calabasas listing, then click on the "register" link).

JANUARY EVENTS AT MOUNTAINS RESTORATION TRUST

Start the new year off right by getting involved with Mountains Restoration Trust! For a complete list of events, visit www.mountainstrust.org.

Plan on taking your first Saturday walk at the Cold Creek Preserve's Lower Stunt High Trailhead on Saturday, January 4 at 9:30 a.m. Savor an early winter walk-about along a streamside trail, through oak woodlands, to a gently rolling chaparral basin below craggy sandstone peaks. Bring water and wear sturdy footwear. For reservations and directions, call (818) 591-9363.

Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, give native fish and tadpoles a chance by removing the non-native, invasive crayfish from Malibu Creek. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear. Register online at www.mountainstrust.eventbrite.com or call (818) 591-1701, extension 212.

Come out and help restore the Arroyo Sequit on Saturday, January 11 at 9:00 a.m. Enjoy the outdoors and make a difference with MRT and Heal the Bay. The Arroyo Sequit Creek at Leo Carrillo State Park is being restored so endangered Southern California Steelhead Trout can use it for spawning. Two concrete barriers are being removed by State Parks and it's up to volunteers to take out the invasive plants! Cape Ivy is the primary target as it is toxic to fish and other aquatic life. Reservations are required by signing up at www.mountainstrust.eventbrite.com.

Meet up with MRT, TreePeople, and the California Native Plant Society on Sunday, January 12 at 8:45 a.m. for a satisfying day of restoring a natural ecosystem. In the early 1980s, CNPS set out to help control the spread of invasive, non-native plant species in Malibu Creek State Park and this unending weed war continues. This month, they will be revisiting the restoration sites so beautifully planted by volunteers earlier last year to see the growth and speculate on what native critters now have a home, food, and shelter in an area that was one a fire-prone field of dead weeds. Reserve your spot by calling (818) 348-5910.

The winter rains have come so the ground at Topanga State Park is ready for planting! The goal is to restore native habitat to this scenic park that is engulfed with invasive, non-native plants. Join MRT and TreePeople to help native animals reclaim their home. Reservations are required by signing up at www.mountianstrust.eventbrite.com.

Check out all the exciting restoration events scheduled for this month by visiting www.mountainstrust.org.
