On March 1, 2010, the City of Calabasas welcomed a delegation from Anqing, China.  Anqing has been a sister city to Calabasas for almost ten years and the partnership between the two cities has been enriched over the years through reciprocal visits of students, residents and government officials in both Anqing and Calabasas.   During their current visit, the representatives from Anqing were especially interested in California water issues and spoke with officials and city staff members about water usage and green initiatives.  The group toured the new Calabasas Civic Center which opened since their last visit in 2007 and also visited Headwaters Corner in Calabasas and Viewpoint School.

Mayor Jonathon Wolfson and Councilmember Dennis Washburn presented the Anqing group with a “Key to the City” before leading the visitors on a tour of the Calabasas Library and City Hall facilities.  The representatives from Anqing were able to learn about the environmentally-friendly design and construction of the Gold LEED facility.  The delegation from Anqing presented Mayor Wolfson and Councilmember Washburn with a decorative scroll with a Chinese inscription about water.  The Anqing delegation is visiting other parts of the United States and Canada during their visit.  Additional information about the Calabasas-Anqing sister City relationship is available online.

THE 2010 CENSUS IS ALMOST HERE

In 1790 the United States Census Bureau counted 3.9 million people living in the United States. That constitutionally mandated decennial population count was the first one completed in the United States. Today, the US Census Bureau mails forms to each address in their data bank. The data collected from the completed and returned forms plus enumerator’s personal interviews, are used to: apportion Congressional seats to states; to make decisions about what community services to provide; and to distribute $400 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.

The official 2010 Census Day is April 1; however, it is important to be aware of some other dates and deadlines. Between March 8 and 10, 2010, the US Census Bureau will mail an advance letter notifying all known addresses in the United States to expect the arrival of the ten question Census questionnaire. Census questionnaires will be mailed to each address in the United States by March 15. From March 15 through the official “Census day”, April 1, all of the forms should be filled out by responsible persons at each address and returned to the US Census Bureau.

The 2010 Census form is the only form that the US Census Bureau will be sending for this census. The form is available in 59 languages including: Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Russian, and English. Unlike prior Census years, there is no long for the 2010 Census. Instead, everybody gets the same questions on one simple form, and those questions should take approximately ten minutes to complete. All information gathered and complied is kept confidential and is protected by Federal law. Fill out the form and return it by April 1, 2010 and be counted!

Questions about language availability and other 2010 Census information can be answered by the West Valley & the Beaches Local Census Office at (818) 712-9799 or by contacting Andrew Cohen-Cutler, Associate Planner for the City of Calabasas at (818) 224-1704.

SEDIMENT REMOVAL REDUCES FLOOD HAZARD FROM LAS VIRGENES CREEK

Erosion from recent brush fires and heavy rains recently carried hundreds of cubic yards of sediment from hillsides into Las Virgenes Creek.  Accumulation of the sediment on a concrete channel adjacent to De Anza Park created a flood hazard to the surrounding communities.  The Los Angeles County Flood Control District, in coordination with the Calabasas Environmental Services division, mobilized a crew with heavy equipment and spent nearly two weeks removing the excess sediment from the flood control channel.  The maintenance crew will be recognized by the Calabasas Environmental Commission on March 2, 2010 for their efforts in protecting and preserving Las Virgenes Creek and surrounding Calabasas homes.
