200 ACRES OF OPEN SPACE PROTECTED IN CALABASAS

A 200-acre section of untouched land near Firehouse 125 at Las Virgenes and Mureau roads in Calabasas, previously owned by realtor/developer Fred Sands and referred to as Firehouse Hill, has been designated as permanent open space.  The land was purchased by Los Angeles County and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority The $6.25 million purchase was made possible through the efforts of a coalition of government officials, particularly Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, parks agencies and environmentalists.  This rural property will now be protected as an important wildlife and plant habitat. These acres of open space act as an unofficial gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, visible to some 184,000 motorists who pass by daily on the 101 Freeway.  The purchase was made possible in part through fees paid by waste haulers utilizing the nearby Calabasas Landfill, along with revenue from a “gas-to-energy” program. The site will be maintained by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority—a Joint-Powers Authority comprising the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy,  the Conejo Recreation and Park District and the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District.
