EARTH DAY FESTIVAL AT LAS VIRGENES CREEK ON
APRIL 3 |
Join
the City of Calabasas Earth Day Celebration on April 3, 2010 at
Las Virgenes Creek
at Agoura Road and Las Virgenes Road (just
behind the Starbucks -
map)
for a spring afternoon of fun and education. The Earth Day celebration will take place between
1:00p.m. and 5:00p.m. and feature exhibits, entertainment,
learning booths, informational speakers and activities that
focus on the environment.
The City
would like to cordially invite non-profit organizations, public
agencies and/or green businesses/vendors to participate in this
exciting event. The Earth Day event will focus on energy
conservation, sustainable living and eco-friendly products and
services. Participating groups will line the Las Virgenes Creek
Restoration Site with a variety of informational and interactive
booths. Last year, the event drew more than 800 visitors from

13TH
ANNUAL CALABASAS FINE ARTS FESTIVAL

The
13th
annual Calabasas Fine Arts Festival will take
place over two days on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May
2, 2010 from 10:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. at the
Calabasas Civic Center and the
Commons at Calabasas
shopping center (adjacent to the
original Park Sorrento Fine Arts Festival location).
Admission and parking are both free.
As always, hundreds of artists
will be on hand selling unique art that can fit into any
budget. The
Calabasas Fine Arts Festival features a number of
returning artists along with an exciting list of new
artisans. The show will have a variety of genre’s of art
including, glass, acrylic, mixed media, metal and
sculpture art, wood work, photography, jewelry and much,

weekend of great artistry, entertainment, food and fun!

CALIFORNIA INTERNATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL
AND APPRENTICE PROGRAM RETURN THIS SUMMER |

The
California International Theatre Festival (CITF)
returns for a second year in Calabasas from July 17 –
25, 2010. The Festival, which features performances
from around the globe, will announce their 2010 line-up
in early April. Check the

The Festival is once again featuring an
Apprentice Program which offers 20-30 promising
students age 18 and up an exciting opportunity to expand
their theatre education and training over a period of
three intensive weeks. Apprentices will attend daily
workshops with acclaimed faculty and special seminars
with visiting artists from around the globe. This unique
international training program will expose students to a
series of diverse acting, movement, & vocal disciplines
including commedia, clown, mask work, kabuki and
innovative character creation, taught by Grotowski,
Decroux, Adler, & Lecoq trained master teachers. It also
will provide apprentices with hands-on experience in
producing and launching an international theatre
festival. Classes are taught by a dedicated
international group of artist faculty that includes
Master Teachers from Universities and theatres
nationwide as well as international artists from the
festival.

2010 NUTS FOR MUTTS 5K WALK |

New
Leash On Life Animal Rescue,
the
Agoura/Calabasas Community Center and
The
Rotary Club of Calabasas have joined forces to hold the
6th annual Nuts for Mutts 5k Walk on Sunday, April 18,
2010. Check-in begins at 8:00a.m. and the walk begins at
9:30am at the Community Center (27040 Malibu Hills Road in
Calabasas).
The Nuts for Mutts walk is a fun-filled, family friendly
fundraiser, now in its sixth year, featuring a 5K
walk-a-thon through Calabasas. Route highlights will include
"pawzstations" with plenty of water, food and fun for pets
of all kinds and their human companions. Visitors and
walkers will also enjoy live music, delicious food, a beer
garden (id required), a “Project Dogway” Fashion Show
(register online), Hollywood Pet Tricks (register online),
celebrity guests and judges, a pet-friendly exhibit area,
children’s activities, a dog training clinic, and over 40
vendors.

APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW
PANEL (ARP) |

The
City of Calabasas is seeking applicants for four open
positions on the City’s
Architectural Review Panel (ARP). As a standing
committee appointed by the members of the City’s Planning
Commission, the ARP reviews pending development projects in
the City and provides architectural design criticism and
feedback to property owners and developers to promote
quality urban design. The positions on the committee cover
two-year terms, ending in May 2012. Qualified applicants
include
persons who, as a result of their training, experience and
educational attainment, are qualified to analyze and
interpret architectural drawings and site planning
information. The pool of qualified applicants may include,
but is not limited to: licensed architects, licensed
landscape architects, urban planners, engineers and
builder/developers. Applicants must reside in or near the
City of Calabasas and the application
deadline is April 30, 2010. Additional information

BIG SUNDAY CREEK CLEAN-UP ON MAY 2 |
|
The
Calabasas
Big Sunday Creek Clean-up will take place on
Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 9:00a.m. to 11:00a.m. at Las
Virgenes Creek on Agoura Road and Las Virgenes Road just
behind the Starbucks.
Big Sunday
is an annual volunteer weekend that takes place each year in
the Los Angeles area and Calabasas is participating this
year with a special Creek Clean-up Event.
Big Sunday
will take place on May 1 and May 2, 2010 and include a
series of environmental events labeled as Green Sunday.
Big Sunday volunteers come from, and volunteer in, all
neighborhoods from the greater Los Angeles area. There are
volunteer opportunities for every passion, every talent, and
every age. Projects are scheduled throughout the weekend to
work with any schedule. Projects can last anywhere from one
hour to two days. Everything about Big Sunday is completely
non-denominational and non-political.

ANZA EN
CALABAZAS 1776 HISTORICAL PAGEANT |

The
Calabasas Anza Heritage Association is pleased to present
the annual "Anza en Calabazas 1776" Commemoration on
Saturday,
April 24, 2010 at 2:00p.m. at
the Leonis Adobe Museum,

Calabasas Road in Calabasas.
This event is produced by the
Calabasas Anza Heritage Association
and is
sponsored by the
City
of Calabasas,
the Calabasas Historical Society,
the Malibu Creek Docents, the
Leonis Adobe Museum, and
the Orion Ranch - Star Route.
The free event features a re-enactment of the Calabasas
Spanish encampment in 1776 and commemorates the Spanish
Colonial era as well as the traditions of the Californios
and Californianas as introduced by Colonel Juan Bautista de

TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR LINDA PURL CONCERT ON MAY 22 AT FOUNDERS

Linda Purl, an
award-winning star of Broadway, film and television, takes the
stage at Founders Hall in the Calabasas Library (200 Civic
Center Way in Calabasas) on Saturday, May 22, 2010 to perform
her dazzling, critically acclaimed live show. Purl will sing a
number of standards such as "Come Rain or Come Shine," "The Best
Is Yet to Come" and "I'll Be Seeing You" during the intimate
concert that crosses several musical genres.
Linda
has starred in over 40 television Movies of the Week, and will
soon be seen on ABC’s Desperate Housewives. Linda was last seen
as Helene Beasley, Pam’s Mother in
The Office.
She is probably best known as Charlene Matlock from the series
Matlock and as Ashley Pfister, Fonzie’s fiancée, from Happy Days
Tickets for the May 22 concert are $20 and include a cheese and
dessert reception before the show. A no host wine bar will also
be available. The reception begins at 7:30p.m. and the

AUTHOR TO SPEAK AT CALABASAS HISTORICAL
SOCIETY MEETING |

The
Calabasas Historical Society will be holding a general meeting,
co-sponsored by the Calabasas Library, on Thursday, April 15,
2010 at 6:30p.m. The meeting will be held at the Calabasas
Library, 200 Civic Center Way, in Calabasas. In addition to
brief society administrative business, the meeting will feature
a talk by author Bronwyn Ralph. Ms. Ralph will discuss
her book Off the Beaten Path about cultural landmarks,
historic monuments and other points of interest in the San
Fernando Valley.
Copies of the book will be available to purchase. Refreshments
and a book signing will follow. The Calabasas Historical
Society meeting is free and open to the public. For more

LIFEGUARD AND WATER SAFETY CLASSES AT
THE TENNIS & SWIM CENTER |
|
Registration
is now available at the
Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center for Lifeguard and Water
Safety Instruction classes provided through the American Red
Cross beginning in April. The schedule of classes is
available here. The Lifeguard classes are
designed
for those who desire to earn their American Red Cross
Lifeguard Certification. Participants will learn basic life
saving skills including water rescues, CPR for The
Professional Rescuer, AED and First Aid training. The
Water Safety Instruction classes help participants earn
their American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
Certification. The primary purpose is to help people learn
to be safe when they are in, on or near water. The program
covers skills and knowledge in logical progression for
aquatic skill development.
Official course
registration forms are available online and at the
Tennis & Swim Center. Each course is $150. Please note
that participants must attend and complete all days listed,
complete all physical tasks and challenges and complete and
pass all written tests to become certified in the course.
Successful Lifeguard course participants will be certified
in Lifeguarding for three years, First Aid as a professional
rescuer for three years and CPR AED for one year. After the
certification expires, a participant must re-certify. After
completing the Water Safety course, participants may teach
swim lessons from the very basic level of swimming to
intermediate/advanced levels of swimming. |

BOOK CLUBS FOR ADULTS AND KIDS AT THE

Calabasas Library is host to two different age-specific book
clubs that are open to the community. Have a 3rd
through 6th grader at home with an interest in reading?
The Library features a
Wednesday Book
Club
specifically for kids in grades 3-6. Membership in the
book club is free and the next meeting is on Wednesday,
April 14, 2010 at 4:00p.m. at the Library to discuss the
book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace
Lin.

MOVIE DISCUSSION GROUP AT THE CALABASAS
LIBRARY |

The
Calabasas Library is hosting a movie discussion
group for adults in April. If successful, additional
meetings will be held. The first meeting is
scheduled for Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 6:00p.m. at
the Library. Participants will watch the film Mine,
a documentary of the powerful story about the
essential bond between humans and animals told against
the backdrop of one of the worst natural disasters in
U.S. history.
If there is sufficient interest after the April meeting,
additional movie discussion meetings will be scheduled
and will consist of a movie (feature film or documentary
no more than 2 hours) with a follow-up discussion of no
more than one half hour.

published a combined Spring and Summer Recreation
brochure for 2010. The double issue, mailed to
residents and available
online, gives families a
chance to plan early for summertime activities and
classes while also taking advantage of all the spring
recreation opportunities in the City. The new brochure
features detailed information about adult and youth
classes, senior citizen programs, community news and
information, sports activities and much more.

E-WASTE
COLLECTION EVENTS |

The
City of Calabasas organizes
two free monthly electronic waste collection events
in addition to the usual monthly
water based paint and used oil collection event.
On the first Saturday of each month (Saturday,
April 3, 2010), an electronic waste collection will
take place at the
Albertson’s parking lot, 26521 Agoura Road (at Las
Virgenes Road)
in Calabasas from 10:00a.m to 3:00p.m. A second monthly
electronic waste event will take place on the 3rd
Saturday of the month, April 17, 2010, in the Vons
Shopping Center parking lot at 23381 Mulholland Drive in
Woodland Hills from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Acceptable items include but are not limited to CD
players, laptops and personal computers, microwave
ovens, printers, radios, stereos, telephones, and VCR’s.
On Saturday, April 10, 2010 there will be a free
water based paint and used oil collection event at
Calabasas City Hall located at 100/200 Civic Center Way
(map)
adjacent to the Commons from 10:00a.m to 2:00p.m. For

HAM RADIO LICENSE STUDY SESSION AND EXAM |

The
City of
Calabasas and the Lost Hills Disaster Communications Service
would like to invite the public to attend an Amateur Ham
Radio Study and Exam Session for an Entry Level FCC License
on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at the
Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. The class will take
place from 9:30a.m. to 5:00p.m. and the one hour exam will
begin at 2:00p.m. There is a $25.00 class fee that includes
class expenses and snacks. Please note that registration is
required and walk-ins will not be accepted. Register today
by sending a check to Norm Goodkin, 22287 Mulholland Drive
#162, Calabasas, CA 91302. Please write "April Ham Class"
on the check memo. Additional beginner classes will be held
on July 11, 2010 and October 10, 2010 for anyone who cannot
attend the April class. Free follow-up classes will be
held at the Sheriff's Station at 7:00p.m. on April 21, May
5, July 21, August 4, October 20, and November 3, 2010.

CALABASAS CLASSIC 5K/10K REGISTRATION

Registration for the 2010
Calabasas Classic 5k/10k Runs is underway.
The 7th Annual Calabasas Classic will be held on Sunday,
November 14, 2010 in Calabasas on a scenic course that
begins in front of the Calabasas Civic Center and is
certified and sanctioned by USATF.
The first 500 registered participants in the 5k/10k or
combo races will receive a custom embroidered HeadSweats
Race Hat, and the first 1000 registered participants
will receive a commemorative recycled-polyester shirt.

SPRING SWIM LESSONS AND MASTERS SWIM
PROGRAM AT THE TENNIS & SWIM CENTER |

Parents
in Calabasas can now register their kids for spring swim
lessons.
Registration forms are currently available at the
Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center.
Joe, the “Tiki Guy,” will be at the Swim Center to
accept registrations and answer phone calls on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30p.m. - 6:30p.m. Class
space is limited and the classes will fill-up quickly!

Are you a swimmer who needs to work on technique, build
endurance or need to be pushed to swim at a higher
level? The City of Calabasas Recreation Department is
hosting a Masters Swim Program that begins a new session
on June 1, 2010. Workouts will include drill sets,
endurance sets and sprints and will be supervised by an
on-deck coach. Intermediate fitness swimmers to
advanced swimmers are welcome to register. The fee for
the program is $30 for Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center
members and $105 for non-members. Please contact Raine
