WATER DISTRICT BEGINS WATER BUDGET
PROGRAM |
|
The
Las
Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) is
notifying customers that a
Water Budget Program is underway in Calabasas
and other LVMWD communities as of July 1, 2009. The
program was authorized by the LVMWD Board in response to
a third consecutive year of below average rainfall and
judicial restrictions on pumping water to Southern
California, resulting in a reduction in allotted supply
announced by the
Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. As of July 1, 2009, single-family residential customers
start each eight-week billing cycle with a base
allotment of 16 billing units of water (nearly 12,000
gallons) for indoor use and apartment/condo customers
will start with 12 billing units. An additional outdoor
budget may be added, based on the size of the property
served and the parcel group to which it is assigned. For more information
about water budgets, please contact the Las Virgenes
Municipal Water District at (818) 251-2100. |

REMEMBER TO GET PERMITS FOR MAJOR YARD
IMPROVEMENTS |
|
Calabasas homeowners are
constantly imagining ways to make their outdoor living
spaces more comfortable, convenient, and beautiful. Plans
are formulated for backyard and side yard improvements, such
as patio covers, gazebos, outdoor fireplaces, swimming pools
and spas, and barbeques. In most cases, these improvements
require consultation with City staff and the issuance of
permits to ensure that the plans meet with the requirements
of the City’s Land Use and Development Code and the State
Building Code.
When planning to
construct a new shade trellis, patio cover, barbecue, pool
and spa, retaining wall, or outdoor fireplace, Calabasas
homeowners are required to bring plans for those
improvements to City Hall for a review by the Planning
Division. City planners know the development standards of
the various zoning districts in Calabasas and will review
plans to verify that every project complies with the
applicable requirements.
Failure to obtain all of the required approvals and permits
prior to commencing construction could result in a Notice of
Violation issued by the City’s Code Enforcement Division,
and to rectify such a notice, homeowners may be required to
obtain retroactive permits costing twice as much as the
legally obtained permit.
There is no cost involved for consulting with City planning
staff, so prior to initiating construction of a major yard
improvement, please call the Planning Division at
818-224-1600 and ask to speak to the planner on duty. The
public counter at City Hall is open Monday through Thursday,
7:30a.m. until 5:30p.m. and on Fridays from 7:30a.m. until
2:00p.m. |

ENERGY-SAVING TIPS FOR THE SUMMER |
|
There
are a number of ways to save energy throughout the
long, hot summer in Calabasas.
A key energy-saving tip is to set thermostats at the highest
comfortable setting. Typical settings are 78 degrees for
summer cooling. Air conditioning operating costs increase
3% to 8% for each degree a thermostat is raised. Make sure
no heat-generating appliances are near the thermostat,
including lamps, televisions, and stereo and computer
equipment.
The easiest way to ensure an air conditioning system is
operating efficiently is by keeping the air filter clean.
Keeping shades and curtains drawn will also reduce radiant
heat from the sun inside homes and businesses. Windows and
doors should always be shut while air conditioning is
running. Replacing older, inefficient windows and doors can
also lower energy costs and will extend the life of an air
conditioning system. Windows with more efficient low-E glass
reduces the sun's warming rays. Please note that a permit
is required when replacing windows and doors. For more home
and business energy saving tips, please visit
http://www.energysavers.gov.
