CALABASAS
COMMISSIONER RECEIVES NATIONAL PLANNING RECOGNITION |
|
Longtime
Calabasas resident and Planning Commissioner David Brown has been
awarded a 2008 National Planning Award from the
American Planning
Association. The National Planning Awards Program, sponsored by
the American Planning Association (APA) and the American Institute
of Certified Planners (AICP), is considered to be the planning
profession’s highest honor. The award will officially
presented in April 2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“David Brown represents the
best in citizen-led planning advocacy. Through his constant presence
in the planning arena, David has personally demonstrated what is
necessary to every community – having an active and engaged
citizenry who care enough about where they live and their
community's future that they get involved in the planning process,”
said Carol Rhea, the
2008 National Planning Awards Jury Chairperson.
Commissioner Brown has served in numerous advisory
positions, including on the City of Calabasas General Plan Advisory
Committee, the Planning commission, and as President of the Las
Virgenes Homeowners Federation. He also has received numerous
honors for his leadership as a planning advocate and
conservationist. As a member of the Citizen Advisory Committee of
the State of California Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy for more
than 22 years, he reviewed and commented on the acquisition 60,000
acres and creation of 114 parks throughout the greater Los Angeles
region.

A
Grand Opening Ceremony
celebrating the completion of the
Las Virgenes Creek Restoration project
is scheduled for Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 11:00a.m.
at the creek restoration project site on
Agoura Road near Las Virgenes Road
(behind Starbucks at

WHAT TO
DO ABOUT HOLIDAY WASTE |
|

Americans generate about 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving
and New Years than any other time of the year, according to the
California Integrated Waste Management Board. However, there are
many alternatives in decorating gifts that are creative and
environmentally friendly.
The beautiful colors and patterns in holiday wrapping paper contain
dyes and chemicals that make it difficult to be recycled. Gift bags
and pre-printed gift boxes are great alternatives to wrapping paper,
especially since they are reusable. Be creative by wrapping presents
in fabric or turn gift-giving into a game by hiding presents around
the house. Consider giving gifts that do not generate waste such as
music or sports lessons, gym memberships, or tickets for special
events: concerts, the opera, a musical or sporting event.
Holiday trees can be properly cared for and recycled after the
holidays: cut about one inch off the base of the tree trunk and
place it in the tree holder with hot water. Also, consider
purchasing an artificial tree or a live tree that can be planted
after the holidays. For those residents interested in "recycling"
live Christmas trees, please remove all ornaments, cut the tree in
half and place the tree in a green color yard waste bin for
collection until January 5, 2008. Please note that flocked trees
and those coated with fire retardants cannot be accepted. Please
contact G.I. Industries at (818) 782-2474 with any questions. |

WARNING
ABOUT CONTAMINATED TOYS |
|
The
California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has warned
California consumers to be aware of a major recall of Chinese-made toys
contaminated with lead paint. Toymaker Mattel has announced a voluntary recall
of about 253,000 die-cast cars in the U.S. which features the "Sarge"
character from the "CARS" vehicle line. Excessive levels of lead paint
can be toxic if ingested by young children and can pose a health hazard.
This issue is similar to concerns about toxics in packaging and lead in
children's jewelry, both of which the legislature has given DTSC
authority to address. The lead in jewelry standards went into effect
September 2007. This type of concern illustrates the need to find
different approaches to protect consumers and the environment. For more
information on the recall, please visit the California Department of Toxics Substance Control
website located at:
http://www.dtsc.ca.gov/PressRoom/upload/News_2007_T_14_07.pdf
or visit the Toy Hazard Recalls website maintained by the U.S. Consumer Safety Protection
Commission:
