LAS
VIRGENES CREEK RESTORATION GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION & AWARD
ANNOUNCED |
|
A
Grand Opening Ceremony
celebrating the completion of the
Las Virgenes Creek Restoration project
is scheduled for Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 11:00a.m.
at the creek restoration project site on
Agoura Road near Las Virgenes Road
(behind Starbucks at
26531 Agoura Rd in Calabasas). The
public is invited to attend.
Underway since July
2007, the Las Virgenes Creek
Restoration Project included the removal of
over 1,500 tons
of concrete and other non-native material from Las Virgenes Creek
between Highway 101 and the Agoura Road Bridge. The creek now has
the chance to once again be an environmentally harmonious water
channel
with native vegetation replacing concrete and litter debris.
The Ventura
County Chapter of
American Public Works Association has selected the Las Virgenes
Creek Restoration Project as one of their 2007 Projects of the
Year. The award was established to” recognize outstanding
individuals, groups, and chapters representing the best in the
public works profession.” The City will receive the award at a
February 14, 2008 American Public Works Association luncheon.
For more information on the Las Virgenes Creek
Restoration Project, please contact Alex Farassati, Environmental
Services Manager, at (818) 878-4225. |

CITY
SETS 75% RECYCLING GOAL FOR 2012 |
|
The
Calabasas City Council adopted
a resolution on January 16, 2008
setting a new recycling goal of 75% by 2012, making Calabasas only
the second California city (after San Francisco) and the first city
in Southern California to set such an ambitious goal for
recycling.
Based on a study conducted by Calabasas staff, nearly 80% trash
delivered to landfills in Southern California could be
recycled.
Calabasas currently recovers more than 55% of the materials it
discards. The new Council directive means that through the collective
effort of all residents and businesses, the City plans to divert 5%
additional waste away from landfills to recycling facilities each
year to achieve the 75% diversion goal by 2012.
As part of the resolution, the City Council has directed staff to:
-
Enter into franchise agreements with haulers that can meet
city’s expectations;
-
Prepare an ordinance to require contractors to recycle
construction and demolition debris; and
-
Prepare an ordinance to commercial and multi-family property
owners to upgrade their sub-standard trash enclosures that
cannot accommodate a recycling container.
City staff will provide outreach and technical assistance to the
public, businesses and schools, initiate innovative programs to
maximize waste prevention and recycling, and partner with
organizations with compatible goals.
For more information about recycling opportunities in Calabasas,
please contact Alex Farassati at (818) 878-4225, ext. 307. |

Anniversary
Big Sunday

CONTROLLING EROSION IN THE CITY |
|
The
City of Calabasas takes pride in having scenic hills, majestic oaks, and
plenty of natural beauty. One of the ways the City preserves a high
quality of life is through reducing pollution in storm water. By
evaluating impacts on water quality, the City is working to find a
healthy balance between building communities and maintaining a clean and
safe environment for current residents and future generations.
October 1 through April 15 is considered the rainy season in this
region. During the rainy season, severe erosion can occur when storm
water strikes bare ground.
|
Erosion Causes: |
Which Can Result In: |
|
Mud Covered Streets |
Hazardous Road Conditions |
|
Clogged Storm Drains |
Flooding and Property Damage |
|
Water Flowing With Sediment |
Water Pollution In Creeks and the Santa
Monica Bay |
Each homeowner is responsible for erosion control measures on his/her
property. During the rainy season, erosion control measures should be
in place on all property and maintained throughout the rainy season.
Residents in gated communities or members of HOAs are not exempt from
erosion control measure requirements.
Examples of typical erosion control measures include:
-
Hydroseed bare slopes by September 1 to establish plants prior to
rains
- Place erosion control blankets, also called “Geotextiles and Mats” on
slopes
- Install sandbags or straw bales to follow the slope contours around
the perimeter of the low side your property
- Apply hydraulic, wood or straw mulch or soil binders on bare slopes
Detailed information on selecting
appropriate erosion control measures and how to implement them can be
found on the California Stormwater Quality Association web page at
www.cabmphandbooks.com
- select the “Construction” handbook and click on any of the BMP Fact
Sheet links provided in the table of contents.
Residents with
questions on installing or maintaining erosion control measures should
contact the City of Calabasas Department of Public Works at (818)
878-4225. |
