CALABASAS RECYCLING FISCAL YEAR IN REVIEW |
|
The
City of Calabasas is committed to the
recycling of products hazardous to our
local ecosystems.
For the fiscal 2007-2008 year, Calabasas collected
electronic waste from 1,664 customers living in all
nearby cities and communities
and collected 183,090 pounds of mixed electronic waste, easily
surpassing the previously set goal of 150,000 pounds for FY07-08. Since
Calabasas began advertising fluorescent light bulb collection in
February 2008, the City has collected and recycled approximately 1,588
florescent and regular light bulbs. The goal for 2008-09 is to collect
and recycle at least 200,000 pounds of electronic waste.
E-waste round-ups
are open to residents and businesses from all cities and communities and
are held on the first Saturday of every month in the Albertson’s parking
lot at 26521 Agoura Road from
10:00a.m. to 3:00p.m.
For the fiscal year
2007-08, Calabasas collected 11,228 pounds of dry cell batteries, an
increase of 23% from the previous fiscal year with the total weight of
9,149 pounds. Varieties collected included alkaline, NiCad and lead
acid cells. The goal for next year is to collect 13,000 pounds of
batteries. A list of
battery drop-off locations is available online. During the past year, Calabasas collected 4,953 gallons of
water based paint, 73 car batteries, 58 used oil filters, 631 gallons of
used motor oil and 35 gallons of antifreeze.
In partnership with the Lions International, Calabasas collected and
recycled 395 eyeglasses. The recycled eyeglasses will eventually be
cleaned, sorted and shipped to developing countries and will be
distributed for free to those in need of reading glasses. |

ANNUAL
CALABASAS
RUBBERIZED STREET OVERLAY UPDATE |
|

The annual street overlay program is coming to a close and
all streets in the Street List posted
online have received a new layer of rubberized asphalt. If any
residents notice any “No Parking” signs or orange cones still
posted, please feel free to notify “Sully-Miller Contracting” at (800) 431-9842 or
(714) 720-7453 for prompt removal.
Throughout August, work will continue with pavement striping, utility
adjustments and finishing touches on each street. Some work may still
require the contractor to post temporary “No Parking” signs, but parking
should be made available at the end of each day. If special
accommodations are required, please contact the 800 number listed
above. |

DOG
OWNERS: PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR POOCH |
|
Animal
waste contains disease-causing pathogens that, when left on the ground,
wash down local storm drains and contaminate beaches.
Scientific studies have shown that bacteria from
domesticated dog waste pollutes local beaches.
Dog
waste left on the ground can
increase the risk of viral infections, especially after becoming wet due
to rain or sprinklers.
When taking a dog for a walk or to the park, please don’t forget to bring a bag or other container for clean up. Most
communities have an ordinance against leaving dog waste on the sidewalk
or street. Some carry a fine. Calabasas relies on residents taking
responsibility and cleaning up after their dogs in yards, open lots, and
along streets and trails. |

THE
IMPORTANCE OF POOL AND FOUNTAIN MAINTENANCE |
|
While
enjoying summertime fun at pools and upgrading lawns with fountains, it
is important to be mindful of proper water disposal. Chlorine from
swimming pool water, when discharged into the storm drain system, can be
extremely toxic to aquatic life.
In lakes, lagoons, and
fountains, the main pollutants of concern are chemical algaecides that
are added to control the development of algae. There are ways to reduce
the risk of contamination from pool and fountain water. The City's
Environmental/IGR Division has issued a helpful fact sheet on
Pool and Fountain Maintenance to help reduce
this risk of contamination. |
