2007 CARL GIBBS ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS |
|
The
2007
Carl Gibbs Environmental Excellence Awards have been
awarded to Calabasas Planning Commissioner Dave Brown,
A.E. Wright Middle School
teacher Ms. Trisha Kane, and Las Virgenes Municipal
Water District scientist Dr. Randal Orton.
Commissioner Brown and Dr. Orton received their awards
on March 4, 2008 and Ms. Kane will receive her award at
the
Environmental Commission meeting on April 1, 2008.
Commissioner Brown was
chosen for the award in recognition of his commitment to
enhance the environment which has been demonstrated by
advocating policies and plans for wildlife protection,
the preservation of oak trees, creeks and riparian
habitat, the acquisition and maintenance of open space
and the development of real property in Calabasas. Dr.
Orton was honored for his commitment to enhance the
environment which has been demonstrated by his
innovation and dedication to applied science in the
quest to improve the base of knowledge and conditions
found in the Malibu Creek Watershed. And Ms. Kane was
chosen for
her tireless efforts to promote education
of resource conservation and recycling at
A.E. Wright Middle School
and especially to special need students.
The Environmental
Excellence Award was established in memory of former
Environmental Commissioner, Carl Gibbs. Gibbs was one
of the founders of Calabasas and served on the
Environmental Committee and then on the Environmental
Commission for 15 years. He was an advocate for
protecting the environment and preserving Calabasas’

PUBLIC INVITED TO MEETING TO DISCUSS
FRANCHISE WASTE COLLECTION SYSTEM |
|
Upon direction from the
Calabasas City Council, the Calabasas
Public Works
Department is developing a new solid waste franchise collection
system for residents and businesses. The franchise system will
replace the current permit system and it will provide benefits to
establish quality service and promote cleaner neighborhoods through
recycling services, environmental workshops, bulky item pick-ups,
and annual clean-up events. The franchise system will be designed
to provide uniform service standards for haulers operating in each
franchise area. The franchise system also will benefit the City by
limiting the wear and tear on City streets, will assist the City in
meeting the State's waste reduction mandate and City Council goal of
achieving 75% diversion rate by 2012, and will reduce the need for
new landfills.
The public is invited to attend a special meeting of the
Environmental Commission on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 7:00p.m. to
learn about the City’s upcoming solid waste franchise system and
express your expectations from the future haulers that will be
selected by the City. For additional information, please contact
the City of Calabasas Public Works Department at (818) 878-4225. |

GOING "GREEN" IN CALABASAS |
|
The
City of Calabasas has led the way in environmental
stewardship by preserving open space and essential
habitats, expanding recycling opportunities in the City,
restoring local streams, using alternative fuel
vehicles, and prohibiting the use of polystyrene
(otherwise known as Styrofoam). The new Calabasas Civic
Center, opening in July 2008, incorporates sustainable
(green) design features that use less energy and water.
The Calabasas City Council recently formed a Green Task
Force to explore ways in which the City can “green” its
own facilities and encourage development to “go green.”
Residents are encouraged to consider the following
energy saving opportunities in their own homes:
Light Bulbs -
Change at least one regular incandescent light bulb with
an Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent light
bulb.
Air Conditioning and Heating Devices -
Turn off the air conditioner or heating device when not
home. Or set the thermostat’s timer to turn on before
you get home to reduce unnecessary energy use.
Shade Trees -
Planting shade trees can cool a house in the summer and
even shield a house from cold winds in the winter.
Native Plants -
Landscape a home with native plants. Native plants are
adapted to the environment and use less water, which
also means a lower water bill.
Energy Star Appliances -
Almost any household appliances can be replaced with
energy efficient products. Washing machines,
dishwashers, and refrigerators are readily available and
many offer rebates as well as rewarding reductions in
energy bills |
