CALABASAS BUS SHELTER PROJECT

Calabasas will soon be installing a total of five custom fabricated bus shelters in the heart of the City.  Four will be installed along Park Granada, two at each end, and one on Parkway Calabasas at Calabasas Road. These shelter locations have been identified based on daily transit ridership data. The shelter designs have been selected by the CPHA Board and approved by City Council. The shelters will benefit transit users of the regional Metro Bus Line 161, and locally for the users of the City’s Line 1 Shuttle and City’s weekend Trolley. Construction of the shelters and pads are anticipated to begin in mid-May. Other custom shelters are planned to be installed in the near future on the west side of the City at locations with high transit use. Two locations have been identified for shelters on the west side; Las Virgenes Road northbound adjacent to the 101 onramp, and the corner of Agoura Road and Lost Hills Road.

WEST NILE VIRUS IN 2007

West Nile Virus (WNV) activity has been detected in all 58 counties in California. In 2006, there were 276 human infections and 6 deaths recorded in California. The virus continues to remain active in all areas of Los Angeles County.  WNV is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. About 80% of the individuals who are infected with WNV will not experience any illness. The other 20% will have only mild symptoms, such as fever, headache and body aches. However, about 1% of the infected individuals, primarily the elderly and those with lowered immune systems, will develop serious symptoms including encephalitis, meningitis, paralysis, and even death.

Individuals can reduce their risk of mosquito-borne diseases by taking these precautions:

  • Avoid spending time outside when mosquitoes are most active, especially at dawn and dusk.

  • When outdoors, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts.
  • Apply insect repellent according to label instructions.
  • Make sure that doors and windows have tight fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or holes.
  • Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property that can support mosquito breeding.
  • Contact the Los Angeles County West Vector Control District at (310) 915-7370 if there is a mosquito problem where you live or work.

Birds play in important role in maintaining and spreading WNV. Mosquitoes acquire the virus from infected birds and then transmit the virus to people. Evidence of the virus in dead birds is often the first indication that WNV has been introduced into a new region. The public can become part of the state’s monitoring effort for WNV by reporting any crows, ravens, magpies, jays or hawks that may have been dead for less than 24 hours to the California Department of Health Services toll-free hotline: 1-877-WNV-BIRD. Individuals should take note of the bird’s location and its condition before calling for further instructions. The bird should show no signs of decomposition or maggot infestation. While there is no evidence that people can get the virus from handling live or dead infected birds, individuals should not attempt to catch or handle them.

Since horses are susceptible to WNV and a vaccine is available for horses, horse owners are advised to contact their veterinarians about timely vaccinations.  For additional information and brochures, please contact Heather Teodoro at (310) 915-7370 ext. 225.

PUBLIC INVITED TO TWO-DAY GENERAL PLAN VISIONING CHARRETTE

Calabasas citizens and business owners are invited to participate in a two-day visioning “charrette” to help shape the direction of the General Plan Update. The charrette is a series of meetings and product development working sessions held over an extended period. The event is organized into a progression of interactions, each building on the previous session with the primary intent of translating ideas, community identity and goals into visual imagery and graphical representations of what could be.

On Thursday and Friday, May 17 and 18, this public workshop will focus on development of clear statements and images of neighborhood character and city-wide identity and methods to reinforce this in the real world (design elements). Also, strategies will be explored for selected areas of Calabasas regarding infill and revitalization, as suggested by our General Plan Advisory Committee. Exercises and exhibits will cover such planning topics as: land use; job growth and housing; traffic and circulation; site planning; landscape treatments; parks, open spaces, and trails; architectural character and building form; smart growth principles; and “green building” strategies.

Key opportunities for public involvement will be Thursday evening, Friday at noon and Friday evening; although the public is also welcome to drop in at any other time Friday to observe the work in progress.

The overall schedule is as follows:

Thursday, May 17

  • 5:00p.m. – 9:00p.m. - Project introduction and exercises to define neighborhood character and community identity (refreshments provided)

Friday, May 18

  • 8:00a.m. – 12:00p.m. – Staff & consultant work session (public open house)

  • 12:00p.m. - 1:30p.m. – Presentation of draft principles and design concepts and opportunity for public comments

  • 1:30p.m. – 6:00p.m. – Refinement of principles and design concepts by staff and consultants (public open house)

  • 6:00p.m. – 7:30p.m. – Presentation summarizing all charrette work results

All charrette activities will take place at the Agoura/Calabasas Community Center located at 27040 Malibu Hills Road, Calabasas. For more information about how residents can participate, please contact Tom Bartlett, City Planner, at (818) 878-4225 extension 234 or tbartlett@cityofcalabasas.com. Information regarding meetings and progress to date on the General Plan Update, as well as the overall project timetable, can be reviewed here

BUILDING & SAFETY WEEK EVENT AT CITY HALL

To help raise awareness of building safety, the City of Calabasas is celebrating Building Safety Week from May 6 through May 12, 2007 promoting the use, enforcement, and understanding of building safety to protect lives and property. “Building Smarter…for Disasters and Everyday Life” is the theme of Building Safety Week 2007.  In celebration, the City will be hosting an open house with members of the Building & Safety Division.  The community is invited to join us on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at Building & Safety Division located at City Hall at 26135 Mureau Road.  The permit coordinator, building inspectors, plan examiners, code enforcement officers, and the building official, will be on hand to answer questions and explain the importance of permits, inspections, and building codes to ensure safe construction.

“The importance of regulating and enforcing building codes is often overlooked until a catastrophic event occurs,” said City of Calabasas, Building Official, Sparky Cohen. Inspecting buildings during and after construction help to ensure that buildings in the community are safe places in which to live, work, play, and learn.  Building codes in the City of Calabasas help ensure that buildings are as safe as possible. Codes address all aspects of construction including structural integrity, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems, energy efficiency, and property maintenance.  Effective code enforcement requires the support of homeowners, architects, builders, engineers, and others in the construction industry. Building Safety Week recognizes the important professionals who make sure the buildings in our community are safe. “Public safety is our number one concern,” said Cohen.  Building inspectors are available to assist the public and help them understand building safety issues. In this age of do-it-yourselfers it is extremely important for homeowners to work with the City to make sure their residences fully comply with building safety codes.

Building Safety Week, first observed in 1980, is sponsored by the International Code Council Foundation, an organization dedicated to changing the devastating effects of natural disasters and other building tragedies. City of Calabasas is an active member of the International Code Council, a membership organization dedicated to building safety and fire prevention.
