The day starts with the 30th
annual Lakeside Fun Run, sponsored in

Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center
beginning at 8:00a.m. After the Fun Run, the always popular 4th of
July Pet Show will be held at 11:00a.m. at the greenbelt adjacent to

as early as 5:00p.m. on July 4th, access to the area for the fireworks

granted to residents from the neighborhood (i.d. required), event
ticket holders and "Neighborhood Pass" holders. To assist in
controlling traffic flow and community safety, the Los Angeles County
Sheriff's Department will restrict access in the neighborhoods
surrounding the Calabasas High School area.

of affected streets is available here.
Residents on streets affected by traffic flow restrictions who are

Guests anticipated to arrive or depart between the hours of 5:00p.m.

NEW
ROAD STRIPING ALONG CALABASAS ROAD IMPROVES TRAFFIC FLOW |
|
As
part of an ongoing effort to improve traffic flow in Calabasas, a new
striping pattern has recently been installed on Calabasas Road. Much
needed turn lanes have been placed in front of the Bob Smith BMW and
101 West Acura auto dealerships. The eastbound travel lane and
corresponding bike lanes have been shifted toward the dealerships to
allow for safer turning movements and to provide a legal area for
truck loading and unloading to occur. Previously, trucks carrying
newly delivered automobiles would often obscure traffic or need to
park in the roadway. The new striping should result in a safer
and more efficient traffic flow along Calabasas Road. |

CONSERVING WATER MADE EASIER WITH REBATES FOR LOW-FLUSH TOILETS |
|
The
Calabasas Environmental Commission heard a presentation in June
regarding the water conservation benefits of low-flush toilets.
Low-flush toilets have become more popular since 1992 with the
enactment of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act. The Act
established water-use restrictions for new toilets, showerheads, and
faucets and set a national manufacturing standard of 1.6 gallons per
flush for most toilets beginning January 1, 1994. In California, many
jurisdictions and public agencies have incentive programs to encourage
residents to replace their high volume flush toilets with low-flush or
high efficiency toilets. In a trade-in or exchange program, residents
can trade their high-volume flush toilets for low-flush toilets either
for free or for a small fee.
Residents can receive a substantial amount of money back
for purchasing and installing low-flush toilets in their homes.
The
Las Virgenes Municipal Water District offers a rebate program as
an incentive for residents to make the change. Several cities have
successfully enacted a “retrofit at resale” ordinance, in which all
home sellers must retrofit buildings with water efficient plumbing
fixtures. For more information about installing a low-flush toilet,
please call the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District at (818)
251-2200. |

SAFE
OPTIONS FOR HOME NEEDLE DISPOSAL |
|
A
44-year-old trash collector was stuck in the leg with a needle from
someone’s trash. A year later, he started having stomach pains. His
doctor informed him that he had contracted Hepatitis C, probably from
being stuck by the needle. It’s not just trash workers who are at
risk of needle sticks – it’s also neighbors, children, janitors,
housekeepers, and pets. That’s why used needles should never be
thrown in the garbage. All needles should be treated as if they carry
a disease. If someone gets stuck with a stray needle, they’ll need
costly medical tests and experience worry about whether they have
contracted a harmful or deadly disease.
Effective September 1, 2008,
Senate Bill 1305 prohibits disposal of
home generated needles in solid waste and recycling containers. City
of Calabasas residents who need assistance with needle disposal are
encouraged to call 800-772-5657 and order the “SHARPS Disposal by Mail
System.” The system is comprised of a container in which you place
your used needles, a government approved return by mail system and
instructions for use. When the container is full, it is mailed in the
postage pre-paid return box. The waste will then be properly
documented and destroyed. For further information about this
program, or other solid waste and recycling issues, please contact the
City of Calabasas Recycling Coordinator at (818) 878-4225, ext. 314. |

COMMUNITY SERVICE GRANTS PROGRAM |
|
The
City of Calabasas established the Community Service Grants program to
recognize and support community organizations in their effort to bring
invaluable services/programs to the citizens of Calabasas. Two to three
Grant Cycles will be held each Fiscal Year. Grant amounts will vary, to
enable the City to assist as many organizations as possible. Applicants
must be a public school entity or hold a 501 c (3) designation and
benefit the community of Calabasas. An organization may only receive
one award per fiscal year.
Applications
are now being accepted for the first grant cycle of 2007-2008.
Applications will be accepted until 5:00p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2007,
with grant awards being announced in September. Faxes and late

Fiscal Year 2006-2007 and would like to re-apply in 2007-2008, you must
complete an annual report form prior to submitting your application.
The annual report form can
be found

THE
IMPORTANCE OF POOL AND FOUNTAIN MAINTENANCE |
|
While
enjoying summertime fun at pools and upgrading lawns with fountains, it
is important to be mindful of proper water disposal. Chlorine from
swimming pool water, when discharged into the storm drain system, can be
extremely toxic to aquatic life.
In lakes, lagoons, and
fountains, the main pollutants of concern are chemical algaecides that
are added to control the development of algae. There are ways to reduce
the risk of contamination from pool and fountain water. The City's
Environmental/IGR Division has issued a helpful fact sheet on
Pool and Fountain Maintenance to help reduce
this risk of contamination.

REVISED SUMMER PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SERVICES |
|
In a continuing
effort to reduce traffic and congestion during peak hours, the City of
Calabasas has revised the schedule for
public transportation services
during the summer. Line 1 continues unchanged and the existing routes of
Line 2 – Line 11 have been consolidated and revised to improve
overall service. The new routes are Line 2, Line 3 and Line 4. These
three routes provide looping service in segments of the City during
peak hours only. The service of Line 2 includes a stop in Agoura
Hills in front of Willow Elementary. This revised public transit service also benefits
the local schools hosting summer school and riders attending the summer
camps. The summer transportation service is provided at no cost to
riders. The revised routes and schedules are available for viewing
and downloading under the
Public Works Department website. |

CALIFORNIA REFUND VALUE (CRV) RECYCLING REMINDER |
|
Summer is marked with high beverage consumption and also with high waste
of recyclable beverage containers. As California marks twenty years of
the biggest bottle and can recycling program in the country, consumers
will soon have an even greater incentive to recycle.
As of July 1, 2007,
the
California Refund Value (CRV) for bottles and cans purchased at
stores will increase to $0.05 for items under 24 ounces and $0.10 for
items over 24 ounces.
In
January, the CRV paid to consumers upon recycling at a center increased
to those amounts.
Most
beverages packaged in glass, aluminum and plastic -- such as soft
drinks, water, beer, sports drinks, juices and coffee and tea drinks --
are included in the CRV program. Notable exceptions are milk, wine and
distilled spirits.
For CRV recycling
locations and more CRV information, please visit
