MRT DRY
CANYON CREEK CLEANUP |
|
The
Mountains Restoration Trust invites individuals, families and groups
to sign up for "The Great Dry Canyon Creek Cleanup" on Saturday, January
27, 2007 from 9:00a.m. to 12:00p.m., at the interpretive center at
Headwaters Corner at Calabasas, 23075 Mulholland Highway, Calabasas (map).
Winter rains create large amounts of trash in waterways that
eventually dump into the ocean. Among the many items of trash are
plastics, Styrofoam, and aluminum, which are harmful and unsightly
pollutants that can get trapped in waterways. Cleaning up these
materials before they decompose protects hundreds of species and
organisms.
“Winter is the ideal time to clean up the trash from riparian
corridors. Plants and wildlife along the streams are either dormant or
hibernating or away from the riparian corridor,” explains MRT Project
Manager Debbie Bruschaber. “Donating a few hours to pick up trash
protects plants and animals, from the mountains all the way to the
ocean, and leaves a pristine setting for everyone to enjoy.” The Great
Winter Cleanup offers credit for community service hours. Volunteers should wear wet-foot shoes and mud splattering clothes.
Please park and meet at the Headwaters Corners at Calabasas’ Masson House.
To
RSVP or for more information, please call (818) 591-1701, ext. 205.

WASTE
CONTAINER REMINDER FROM CALABASAS CODE ENFORCEMENT |
|
In
an effort to preserve the expected conditions for all who live and
work in Calabasas, the
Code Enforcement office has formed a Waste Container Task Force. The
Code Enforcement Officers are focused on ensuring compliance with the
Municipal Code section which regulates placement of containers at the
curb for collection.
Waste and recycling containers placed at the curb contribute to
traffic visibility problems, parking shortages, accumulation of debris
in the right of way and create a a great temptation to wandering coyotes. The
problem intensifies in the spring as a greater number residents pursue
landscape improvements and overflowing green waste
containers are placed at the curb.
Calabasas Municipal Code Section 8.16.650,
titled Residential municipal solid
waste containers and recycling containers--Time of placement, may be
viewed online. In general, the regulations state:
- Do not place
containers at the curb prior to 5:30p.m. of the day before pick-up.
- Return all
containers to storage on the property by 8:00p.m. on the day of
collection.
Currently, Code Enforcement monitor the City seven days per
week. Violations of the Ordinance are noted and property owners
notified in writing via mail. After a warning notice, repeat
violations are subject to Administrative Citations with fines. The
fines begin at $100 and sequentially increase to $500 per occurrence.
By adhering to legally defined placement hours, we can all help insure
our City continues to be one of the most desirable places to live and
work within Southern California. |

STATE
ANNOUNCES INCREASE IN CALIFORNIA REFUND VALUE (CRV) |
|
As California
marks twenty years of the biggest bottle and can recycling program in the
country, consumers will soon have an even greater incentive to recycle.
Starting on January 1, 2007, residents will get more cash back for their
aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers.
Assembly Bill 3056,
signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on September 30, 2006, raises
the amount of California Refund Value (CRV) consumers receive at
recycling centers to a nickel for containers less than 24 ounces and a
dime for containers 24 ounces and larger.
When people fail to
recycle, it’s not just a waste of the CRV. It also means lost energy
savings, because recycling saves energy, and that valuable raw materials
for manufacturing are tossed away forever. Most beverages packaged in
glass, aluminum and plastic -- such as soft drinks, water, beer, sports
drinks, juices and coffee and tea drinks -- are included in the CRV
program. Notable exceptions are milk, wine and distilled spirits.
Californians have several convenient options for
recycling and redeeming CRV bottles and cans, primarily through
neighborhood curbside programs and the approximately 2,100 certified
recycling centers and drop-off and collection locations throughout
California. To find the nearest certified recycling center, visit
www.bottlesandcans.com or call the Department
of Conservation toll-free hotline, 1-800-RECYCLE.

WHAT TO
DO ABOUT HOLIDAY WASTE |
|
Americans
generate about 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New
Years than any other time of the year, according to the California
Integrated Waste Management Board.
However, there are many alternatives in
decorating gifts that
are creative and environmentally friendly.
The beautiful
colors and patterns in holiday wrapping paper contain dyes and
chemicals that make it difficult to be recycled.
Gift bags and pre-printed
gift boxes are great alternatives to wrapping paper, especially since
they are reusable.
Be creative by wrapping presents in fabric or
turn gift-giving into a game by hiding presents around the house.
Consider giving gifts that do not
generate waste such as music or sports lessons, gym memberships, or
tickets for special events: concerts, the opera, a musical or sporting
event.
Holiday
trees can be properly cared for and recycled after the holidays: cut
about one inch off the base of the tree trunk and place it in the tree
holder with hot water. Also, consider purchasing an artificial tree or
a live tree that can be planted after the holidays.
For those
residents interested in "recycling" live Christmas trees, please
remove all ornaments, cut the tree in half and place the tree in a
green color yard waste bin for collection until January 6, 2007.
Please note that flocked trees and those coated with fire retardants
cannot be accepted. Please contact G.I. Industries at (818) 782-2474
with any questions. |

LOST AND
FOUND FOR ITEMS LEFT AT CITY FACILITIES |
|
Sometimes,
residents lose personal items at Calabasas facilities and these items
are recovered by someone else. If a resident has
lost or found something at a
City facility, they can turn that item in to City Hall, the
Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center, the Agoura/Calabasas Community Center,
or de Anza Park during regular business hours. Please contact Jan Silver
at (818) 878-4225, ext. 256 to report something lost or found.
Accurate descriptions of lost items will have to be provided and there
is no guarantee that items will be found and turned in to the City.
