CIVIC
CENTER CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY |
|

Over two hundred community members joined the Calabasas City Council
in celebrating the Civic Center Groundbreaking on Saturday, January 6,
2007.
The event, which capped a ten year effort to bring a new City Hall and
Library to the City, featured a light fare reception, music, and
comments from members of the City Council and State officials.
Mayor Dennis Washburn was master of ceremonies at the event. He and
the rest of the City Council, both past and present, joined the Civic
Center Task Force, Assemblymember Julia Brownley, former
Assemblymember Fran Pavely, Bessie Condos from the State Office of
Library Construction and other community leaders to break ground at
the end of the ceremony. Architect Peter Devereaux and his firm
Harley
Ellis Devereaux,
in association with renowned designer Robert Stern and
his firm Robert A. M. Stern & Associates, carefully designed the Civic
Center project and representatives were on hand at the ceremony.
Construction by Bernards began on Monday, January 8, 2007.
Once complete in summer 2008, the Civic Center
is designed to be the first municipal complex of
it's kind in the United States to achieve Gold
LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green
Building Council. The
environmentally-friendly project includes a City Hall, a state of the
art 90,000-volume library with 42 technology stations, ample parking and a spacious public plaza. Over 80% of the Civic Center
property will be established as permanent open space and both the City
Hall and Library are designed to use 40% less energy and 30% less
water than standard structures. At least 75% of construction waste
created by the project
will
be recycled.
The City received an $8.2 million dollar grant from the State of
California Office of Library Construction to build the Library. The
construction of the Civic Center will cost $31 million. The rest of
the project costs are for design, construction management, utilities,
fees, testing and contingency.
For
further information about the Civic Center project, including ongoing construction updates and photos,
please visit the Civic Center webpage at

OUTDOOR FIREPLACE PERMIT INFORMATION |
|
The first step
in obtaining permits for an outdoor fireplace is to get approved by
the Planning Division. If the desired fireplace is less than six feet
in height, then you are required to have a minimum distance of five
feet between the fireplace and all property lines. However, if you
are building a fireplace over six feet in height, the general
requirement is to have a minimum distance of 7.5 feet from the
fireplace to side property lines and 17.5 feet from the fireplace to
rear property lines. This may vary depending on the location of your
house on your property, so please contact a planner for specific
requirements.
The type of
Planning Application required will depend on your desired outdoor
fireplace. Outdoor fireplaces less than six feet in height and
fireplaces attached to patio covers that are attached to the main
house require submission of a Zoning Clearance application.
Free-standing fireplaces over six feet in height and fireplaces
attached to unattached patio covers require submission of a General
Land Use and Development application. Improvements to homes located
within a designated scenic corridor may require a Minor Development
Permit; contact a planner for more information. The applications and
the fee schedule can be downloaded from the City of Calabasas website
at the following link:
http://www.cityofcalabasas.com/departments/planning-division.html
Once the
Planning Division approves your plans for the outdoor fireplace, your
next step is to obtain building permits from the Building and Safety
Division. ALL OUTDOOR FIREPLACES REQUIRE BUILDING PERMITS, even if
less than six feet in height or pre-fabricated. Get your building
permit when you apply for your gas line or electrical permit. If the
fireplace is less than six feet in height, Plan Check will not be
required; but if the fireplace is over six feet in height, it must go
through Plan Check for final Building and Safety approval.
Prior to
construction, make sure the details of the outdoor fireplace you are
about to build and its location match the approved plans. Even if you
are planning to make what seems to be a minor change, please call or
come in to City Hall to speak to a planner and inspector prior to
making any changes. Deviations from the approved plans could lead to
a Stop Work Order, fines, or demolition of your fireplace.

DONATE
AND RECYCLE EYEGLASSES AT CITY HALL |
|
According to the
World Health Organization, approximately 25 percent of the world's
population needs eyeglasses.
Globally, one child in four cannot
see well enough to learn to read without glasses. Unfortunately, for
many, a pair of glasses is both unaffordable and inaccessible.
People
in some developing countries have been known to walk miles and miles
to get the free eyeglasses. Calabasas residents
can help a person in need by donating glasses that are no longer in
use.
Donated
eyeglasses may be placed in the collection box at the Calabasas City
Hall or at any of the following facilities:
