PUBLIC
MEETING REGARDING SUMMIT AT CALABASAS COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT |
|
The
Calabasas
Planning Division is preparing an Environmental Impact Report (EIR)
for a proposed commercial development to be located at the northeast
corner of Lost Hills Road and Agoura Road intersection (26787 Agoura
Road). The Summit at Calabasas is a new commercial project proposed
by Dollinger Lost Hills Associates, LLC. The proposed project
involves the vacation of an existing right-of-way, the combination of
two lots, a change of the existing zoning of Commercial Business into
Commercial Retail, and a general plan amendment to accommodate the
development of a commercial center with five one-story buildings
totaling approximately 70,100 gross square feet of commercial space.
The project would require the demolition of an existing one-story
single-family residential structure and a one-story accessory
structure. In accordance with the
California
Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) guidelines an Initial Study (IS)
has been prepared for this project and it has been determined that the
project requires an Environmental Impact Report (EIR). A Notice of
Preparation (NOP) was prepared and on July 26, 2007 it was distributed
to the State Clearinghouse and other local, state and federal
agencies.
The City of Calabasas will hold a meeting to receive public comments
on the scope of the Environmental Impact Report analysis, on August 6,
2007 at 2:00p.m. The scoping meeting will be held at
City Hall
in the Council Chambers located at 26135 Mureau Road in Calabasas.
For further information or to submit comments, please contact Isidro
Figueroa at (818) 878-4225, ext. 233. |

WEST NILE
VIRUS UPDATE AND INFORMATION |
|
As of
the end of July, there have been no human cases of West Nile Virus
reported in Los Angeles County. However
according to the Los Angeles Times, there have been 36 human cases
of West Nile Virus reported statewide compared to 16 cases at this
time last year.
West Nile Virus is primarily
transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most
individuals who are infected with West Nile Virus will not experience
any illness. Others will have only mild symptoms, such as fever,
headaches and body aches. Less than one percent of individuals,
primarily the elderly and those with lowered immune systems, will
develop serious illness that will require medical attention.
Birds play an important role in
maintaining and spreading West Nile Virus. Mosquitoes acquire the
virus from infected birds and then transmit the virus to people.
Evidence of the virus in dead birds is often the first indication that
West Nile Virus has been introduced into a new region. Individuals
should take note of the bird’s location and its condition before
calling for further instructions. The bird should show no sign of
decomposition or maggot infestation. While there’s no evidence that
people can get the virus from handling live or dead infected birds,
individuals should not attempt to catch or handle them.
The Centers for Disease Control
have put together a
webpage called "Fight the Bite!" to help families take steps to
avoid infection. The public can become part of the state’s monitoring
effort for West Nile Virus by reporting any crows, raven, magpies,
jays or hawks that may have been dead for less than 24 hours to the
California Department of Health Services (1-877-WNV-BIRD).
If residents are bothered by
mosquitoes, need assistance with eliminating breeding sources on or
around your property, or if you would like to obtain mosquito fish,
please contact the
Los Angeles
County West Vector Control District
at
(310) 915-7370. |

LAS VIRGENES CREEK RESTORATION PROJECT GROUNDBREAKING
CEREMONY |
|
The
City held groundbreaking ceremony for the
Las Virgenes Creek Restoration
Project on Wednesday, July 18, 2007. The Las Virgenes Creek Restoration
Project has been planned for several years and would not have been
possible without the support and effort of numerous people. The
City is hopeful that restoring the current concrete lined channels of
Las Virgenes Creek to a native habitat will enhance biological activity
and heal habitat fragmentation; attract recreation; educate the public
about urban watershed issues; and re-establish the ecosystem and
tributary to the Malibu Creek and Lagoon.
Four hundred feet of concrete liner will be removed, and
the channel will be planted with native vegetation. The project is part
of a larger creek restoration and rehabilitation vision
developed by the City of Calabasas and its staff in conjunction with
regional stakeholders and local community groups.
Project Statistics
◦ The area
to be restored is 400 feet long x 45-60 feet wide x 18 feet high.
◦ The project will require 3,000 cubic yards of
earthwork.
◦ 1,500 tons of concrete and other materials will have to
be removed (3,600 square yards of concrete alone).
Construction is expected to end by November 2007. |
