LAS
VIRGENES CREEK RESTORATION WEBSITE LAUNCHED |
|
A
new webpage has been created for the
Las Virgenes Creek Restoration project.
The page will be updated regularly as the
restoration progresses.
The Las Virgenes Creek Restoration Project,
when complete, will have a regional impact on policy for urban stream
restoration in the Santa Monica Mountains. The Malibu Creek Watershed
provides habitats for numerous species including steelhead trout, the
southwestern pond turtle, Arroyo toad, Pacific tree frog, American
goldfinches, song sparrows, coyotes, mountain lions. The City of
Calabasas has sought funding from numerous State and Federal agencies
to restore this segment of Las Virgenes Creek to its native condition
and re-establish the ecosystem and tributary to the Malibu Creek and
Lagoon.
In 2003, the City Council approved a
conceptual design and the final restoration plans provide useful
riparian habitat while still meeting flood control requirements.
For more
information on the Las Virgenes Creek Restoration Project, please

ARBOR DAY A HUGE SUCCESS |
|
The
City of Calabasas,
the Mountains Restoration Trust, and
Tree City USA hosted another successful Arbor Day celebration at Wild
Walnut Park
on
Saturday, March 10, 2007. This event brought together approximately 70
people to celebrate nature and served as a reminder of the actions that
people can take to impact the environment positively. Many student
volunteers representing Earth Club and Project Cool Down from Calabasas
High School, and Key Club from Granada Hills High School arrived early
and jumped right in to digging holes and planting saplings of Valley
Oak, Currant, and Walnut trees. Several students from Malibu and Agoura
Hills also came by to help. Young children were delighted to get their
hands dirty, while their parents enthusiastically explained that they
would be able see the trees grow bigger every year. City Council members
and Environmental Commissioners also joined in on the event. As a result
of the wonderful turnout, more than 100 trees were planted by the end of
the celebration.
The City of Calabasas was also awarded the 2006 Tree City
USA title by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the numerous Saratoga
trees that were planted in the Mulwood area as a result of a grant that
the State Department of Forestry awarded the City. The recognition was
followed by the official tree-planting ceremony, symbolic of Arbor Day,
in which
City Council members and
Environmental Commissioners lent a
helping hand. |

BUILDING & SAFETY WEEK EVENT AT CITY HALL |
|
To help
raise awareness
of
building safety, the City of Calabasas is celebrating Building Safety
Week from May 6 through May 12, 2007 promoting the use, enforcement, and
understanding of building safety to protect lives and property. “Building Smarter…for Disasters and Everyday Life” is the theme of
Building Safety Week 2007. In celebration, the City will be hosting an
open house with members of the Building & Safety Division. The
community is invited to join us on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at
Building &
Safety Division located at City Hall at 26135 Mureau Road. The permit
coordinator, building inspectors, plan examiners, code enforcement
officers, and the building official, will be on hand to answer questions
and explain the importance of permits, inspections, and building codes
to ensure safe construction.
“The importance of
regulating and enforcing building codes is often overlooked until a
catastrophic event occurs,” said City of Calabasas, Building Official,
Sparky Cohen. Inspecting buildings during and after construction help to
ensure that buildings in the community are safe places in which to live,
work, play, and learn. Building codes in the City of Calabasas
help ensure that buildings are as safe as possible. Codes address all
aspects of construction including structural integrity, electrical,
mechanical, and plumbing systems, energy efficiency, and property
maintenance. Effective code enforcement requires the support of
homeowners, architects, builders, engineers, and others in the
construction industry. Building Safety Week recognizes the important
professionals who make sure the buildings in our community are safe.
“Public safety is our number one concern,” said
Cohen. Building inspectors are available to assist the public and help
them understand building safety issues. In this age of do-it-yourselfers
it is extremely important for homeowners to work with the City
to make sure their residences fully comply with building safety
codes.
Building Safety
Week, first observed in 1980, is sponsored by the International Code
Council Foundation, an organization dedicated to changing the
devastating effects of natural disasters and other building tragedies.
City of Calabasas is an active member of the International
Code Council, a membership organization dedicated to building safety and
fire prevention. |

NEW
REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW AND EXISTING POOLS, SPAS, AND TODDLER POOLS |
|
On
January 1, 2007, a new law went into effect in California regarding
the safety and security of a variety of swimming pools and spas
located at private homes. The Swimming Pool and Spa Safety Act
(AB2977) requires that an anti-entrapment cover be installed at the
suction outlet of an existing pool and/or spa any time a building
permit is issued for the remodel or modification of a single family
home. Prior to approving the final inspection of a home remodel,
repair, or alteration permit issued after January 1, 2007, a
City/County inspector must verify that an anti-entrapment device is
installed in an existing pool, spa, or toddler pool within the
property boundaries for the address shown on the permit.
Hair entanglement is far and away the most common drain - related
killer of children between the ages of 2 and 6. When bathers or
swimmers place their heads in the vicinity of active pool drains,
their hair may become entangled in the drain cover or grating.
Building inspection staff can assist residents in determining whether
or not an existing pool or spa is equipped with an anti-entrapment
safeguard. Contact a local pool contractor or pool maintenance
company for installation information. For more information on
this new requirement, contact the Calabasas Building & Safety Division
at (818) 878-4225. |
