NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH AND EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS RESOURCES

September is National Preparedness Month.  The Los Angeles Fire Department has released a brochure to assist families with all kinds of disaster preparedness.

Earthquakes can strike the southern California region at any time.  It's vitally important for individuals and families to take a moment and think about ways to prepare for an incident.  The San Francisco Chronicle website features an
online  series called "Quake Country" that features step by step instructions on creating an earthquake kit, making sure homes are safe and prepared for a quake, information on the importance of water, tips on whether or not to turn off gas after a quake and more.

The City of Calabasas has created websites for Earthquake preparedness, information for preparing children for earthquakes and other emergencies and a planning guide for seniors and people with disabilities.  Additionally, the United States Geological Survey website features a live map of recent quakes for California and the entire world.  Updated within an hour of a quake occurring, the site also asks residents who feel a quake to report it through the website.

CALABASAS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR HONORED

Calabasas Community Development Director Maureen Tamuri was honored by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal with a “Woman of Distinction” Award for service in government.  The award was presented at fifth annual “Women Who Mean Business” luncheon on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills.  The event featured nine categories to “honor outstanding achievements made by women in business” in the greater San Fernando Valley region.  “The City Council and staff of the City of Calabasas are extremely proud that Maureen has been commended for her outstanding work in economic development and community planning,” said Mayor Dennis Washburn.  “It is wonderful that the San Fernando Valley region recognizes her contributions to the quality of life in the wider community.”

Maureen Tamuri has displayed exceptional leadership in heading the development and planning operations of the City since joining Calabasas in April 2004.  Her tenacity, expertise and enthusiasm have resulted in greater efficiency in the City’s issuing of permits, prudent community development and steadfast stewardship of the City’s Civic Center project.   “I’ve receive so many compliments from residents about how professional and efficient our Planning Department is and I think a lot of that comes from the leadership Maureen provides,” said Calabasas City Councilmember Mary Sue Maurer.  Prior to joining the City of Calabasas, Maureen worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District, the City of Los Angeles and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

THE DO'S AND DON'TS OF SIGN PLACEMENT IN THE CITY OF CALABASAS

The Calabasas Planning Department would like to remind residents about City policy as detailed in the Calabasas Municipal Code regarding the placement of signs within the City.

Please refer to the following chart for a summary of the "do's and don'ts" of sign placement:

DO consult the Calabasas Municipal Code section 17.30 before erecting your sign.  This section of the code will outline the types of signs that are allowed, as well as applicable design standards and criteria.

DON’T erect your sign without having consulted the Calabasas Municipal Code for information regarding allowed signs, design standards and criteria.

DO visit City Hall to obtain a permit before erecting your sign.

DON’T erect your signs without having obtained the proper permits from City Hall.

You may demonstrate your civic pride and political convictions at election time with signs that conform to City standards (17.30.030).  DO be sure to remove these signs immediately following the election.

DON’T place cardboard, plastic, or other temporary signs on telephone poles, light poles, etc.  These temporary signs are not permitted under any circumstance and will be removed.

If you are trying to sell your property, DO place temporary real estate signs that conform to City standards (17.30.030) only on your property.

DON’T place temporary real estate signs such as “for sale” or “open house” in the street or sidewalk.

If your business is located within a multi-tenant center, together with other business tenants, most likely you and your neighboring tenants have similar signs.  DO consult your landlord regarding the approved sign program for the entire commercial center before committing to any new sign.  Have your landlord sign the City’s Sign Permit Application before submitting for the permit.

DON’T place neon or flashing light signs in your windows, or erect a billboard, pole sign, or any type of “off-site advertising.”  These types of signs are not allowed per section 17.30.040.

DO call City Hall and speak with a Planner if you have any questions.  They can assist you in preparing your application and understanding what is permitted.
