US POSTAL SERVICE RECOGNIZES 91301 ZIP CODE FOR CALABASAS

The US Postal Service has agreed to recognize the 91301 ZIP code as a valid ZIP code for the City of Calabasas.  Many residents had expressed serious concerns about the ramifications of living in Calabasas but having their 91301 ZIP code classifying them as being in Agoura Hills.  After efforts by the Calabasas City Council and staff, the USPS agreed to update their database to reflect that Calabasas is an acceptable City name for the 91301 ZIP code.  Therefore, all mail sent to the 91301 portion of Calabasas and the 91302 ZIP code can now be addressed as “Calabasas, CA.”  The City will be posting a sample letter that residents can use to notify insurers, cable companies, telephone companies, and any other business about the change.

ACTING AS YOUR OWN CONTRACTOR

The City's Building and Safety Division urges residents considering acting as their own general contractor, or "owner/builder", to consider the following.

"Owner/builder" describes a situation in which the homeowner becomes the general contractor. As an owner/builder, one assumes responsibility for the overall job.  Responsibilities may include such things a state and federal taxes, workers’ compensation insurance, and other legal liabilities. Someone acting as their own general contractor may be required to hire various subcontractors for the project, scheduling their work and supervising the job. If a worker is injured while working on the property, one could be asked to pay for injuries and rehabilitation through a homeowner’s insurance policy.  By signing a building permit application as an owner/builder, the owner assumes full responsibility for all phases of the project and its integrity.  Hiring an unlicensed "consultant" to manage the project does not save money in the long run either.

When a licensed experienced contractor is hired for a project, the contractor becomes responsible for all phases of construction.  Unless someone is very experienced in construction, it is best to leave these matters to a licensed contractor.  For additional information, please call the Contractors State License Board at (800) 321-CLSB, or visit www.cslb.ca.gov.

INTEGRATED REGIONAL WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN WORKSHOPS

The Public Review Draft of the Integrated Regional Water Management Plan (IRWMP) for the Greater Los Angeles County Region (Region) is currently available on the Plan website.   The IRWMP is an outgrowth of ongoing efforts to develop plans, projects, and programs that utilize an integrated approach to water and other resource management issues.  The plan acknowledges that for the Region to meet future needs, water supply planning must be integrated with other water resource issues, such as urban storm water runoff management, groundwater and wastewater quality improvements, maintenance of flood protection, habitat and open space conservation, and the provision of sufficient park space.  The document is the result of more than nine months of work by a Leadership Committee, five sub-regional Steering Committees representing more than seventy agencies, jurisdictions, stakeholder organizations and input from eighteen stakeholder workshops.

The public has an opportunity to discuss the Draft Plan at several scheduled workshops:
