CALIFORNIA CONDOR SIGHTED IN TOPANGA CANYON

The Los Angeles Times reports that a five-year old boy named Gabriel Gottfried has made an extremely rare spotting of a California Condor in Topanga Canyon.  According to the newspaper, Gabriel's sighting represents the first known Condor in the Canyon in 100 years.  The recent Day Fire probably caused the bird to temporarily fly south in order to escape the blaze.  The Los Padres National Forest holds the Sespe Condor Sanctuary and Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge where condors have been released to live in the wild.  At one point, there were only 22 California Condors known to be left in existence.  Today, according to U.S. Department of Fish & Wildlife, there are 289 California Condors flying free in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Mexico.

Young Gabriel managed to photograph the  endangered bird with his digital camera and his photograph (shown in a photograph courtesy of the Los Angeles Times) has captured the attention of birdwatchers everywhere.

AMERICA RECYCLES DAY

The Earth's finite natural resources are being depleted. When a new soda can is created, for instance, the production process emits toxic gases that pollute the air, land, and water. Recycling eliminates the pollution associated with the initial stages of a product’s development, and conserves energy and the land. In 2002, President Bush declared November 15 as America Recycles Day encouraging all Americans to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Over 70 million tons of material has been diverted away from landfills within the United States, due to mass conservation and recycling efforts since 2002. Therefore, materials are being turned into valuable resources instead of becoming waste and taking up space in our landfills. These resources include many items available at grocery stores, computers, and furniture.

The City of Calabasas has implemented programs to aid Calabasas residents in their recycling efforts by hosting city wide collection events: battery, electronics, water based paint, and used oil collections.  Although Calabasas residents and the nation at large have made significant progress, over 50 percent of Calabasas trash could have been diverted away from the landfills and recycled, according to permitted city haulers. Recycling is therefore vital and mandatory.  Additional efforts are necessary to decrease the amount of waste produced—become involved in America Recycles Day and continue conserving daily.
