RELAY FOR
LIFE RAISES OVER $126,000 |
|
The
Calabasas Relay for Life raised over $126,000 for the American
Cancer Society from June 24-25, 2006 as teams of walkers braved 100
degree heat and stayed on the
Calabasas High
School
track for 24
hours. Relay for Life walks are held nationwide and allow a
community to come together to raise awareness of cancer, celebrate
survivors, remember those lost to
the disease, and raise funds to fight cancer through research,
education, advocacy and patient services.
Photos from the 2006 Calabasas Relay for Life are available on the
City of Calabasas website.
Organizers expect the 2007 Relay for Life to be an even greater
success. Additional details about forming teams and raising
funds will be available next spring. For more information about

CALABASAS INN REDEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL |
|
The Calabasas
City Council and
Planning Commission will hold a joint
meeting on July 5, 2006 to discuss redevelopment of the Calabasas Inn
site.
The
Calabasas Inn, which is located at 23500
Park Sorrento, has historically been used as a banquet facility. The
City has now received an application to redevelop the site, and will
hold a preliminary public scoping meeting for the purpose of
discussing alternatives for developing the site. The meeting will
also provide Calabasas citizens with an opportunity to provide their
input and to identify potentially significant environmental issues
that should be explored as part of the environmental review process
required by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
The site is centrally located between historical
Old Town Calabasas and the Calabasas Civic Center area that is
currently home to the
Commons at
Calabasas and a future site for the City’s
City Hall and Library. Redevelopment of the site presents an
opportunity to further define an area of Calabasas that is slowly
emerging as the City’s core. The City strongly encourages residents
with comments to attend the July 5, 2006 joint meeting. The meeting
will take place at 7:30p.m. at the City of Calabasas Council Chambers
located in City Hall at 26135 Mureau Road. |

NEW
ZEALAND MUD SNAILS FOUND IN WATERSHED |
|
The New Zealand Mud Snail was positively identified this month in the
Malibu Creek Watershed by Kim Kratz of Aquatic Bioassay and Consulting
Laboratories in Ventura. The
California Department of Fish and Game
verified the finding on Tuesday, May 30, 2006. The snails are an
extremely harmful and invasive species that consume algae resulting in
population crashes of native bottom-dwelling invertebrates like
dragonfly larva. The destruction caused by the snails cause a reduction in forage and thus a reduction in fish and
amphibian populations. This is especially troublesome for the Malibu
Creek Watershed because it is home to two already endangered fish
species: the
Steelhead Trout and the
Tidewater Goby.
The New Zealand Mud Snails were
introduced to North America’s Snake and Madison Rivers in the 1980’s,
and very quickly colonized Yellowstone National Park. Since then
populations have spread to California, probably by attaching to
waders, fishing gear and boats. Averaging a 1/8 inch in length, the
snail appears as a grain of sand during development. Ranging in color
from gray to brown to black, the snails can survive in most types of
water and can live for days attached to moist gear. Densities of over
750,000 per square meter have been found in Yellowstone National Park
waters.
Aquatic Bioassay and Consulting
Laboratories discovered the snails in samples for the Malibu Creek
Watershed Monitoring Program. The snails are already out-competing
native invertebrates at Medea Creek in Agoura Hills. Individuals have
also been identified in samples from Lower Malibu Creek, just north of
the Lagoon. The recommended procedure for preventing the spread of
New Zealand Mud Snails is to freeze equipment exposed to infected
waters for six to eight hours. Mark Abramson of Heal the Bay
referred to the finding as “an ecological disaster in the making.” An emergency summit is being proposed
to address the situation, although fisheries biologist Camm
Swift warns that, “[from] the way it’s been moving around the country you
need to have a strong expectation that you are going to have to live
with it.”

STORM
DRAINS ARE FOR RAIN... |
|

Recent studies have indicated that urban runoff (such as car washing,
hosing off driveways, discharge of chlorinated swimming pool water,
overflow from excessive watering of fertilized and pesticide applied lawns
and animal waste) and direct dumping into the gutters/storm drain system
are the primary sources of pollution in area creeks.
Discharge of swimming pool water into the street is legal only if it has
been dechlorinated/debrominated by halting chemical treatments for a
minimum of 7 days prior to discharge. Draining a swimming pool onto
a neighbor’s property may be illegal pursuant to Calabasas Municipal Code
and therefore subject to a $1,000 per day penalty for each violation.
Please direct all dechlorinated water flow to the public street or into
your sanitary sewer connection.
According to Project
Pollution Prevention, more than 125,000 dog owners walk their dogs each
month and repeatedly leave disease-causing animal waste laying on the
ground. Dog waste washes from the ground and streets into storm
drains and flows, untreated, straight into the ocean.
Dog owners
should always remember to bring a bag on a walk to clean up after their
pets.

day living, visit our website at:

POOL
SAFETY TIPS FROM THE BUILDING & SAFETY DIVISION |
|
With hot
weather descending on Calabasas, now is as good a time as any to check
the safety of area swimming pools to ensure a safe and happy summer
poolside. The
Calabasas Municipal Code offers important guidelines to abide by.
First, pool owners should make sure they have a CPR resuscitation poster
(available
from the Red Cross for $1) visible from the pool. If an
emergency incident occurs, information on a resuscitation poster could
save a life.
Pool owners should also check that all the
GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit
Interrupter) receptacles around the
pool are working properly. Lights should be checked for possible
replacement. Fence enclosures should also be inspected to
make sure nothing has been added to the exterior that would allow the
fence to be climbable or reduced the height from five feet. Check
the self closing springs and that the gates are latching. In addition,
functioning door alarms are inexpensive safety feature and required by
code. Please remember that no matter how many safety measures are in
place, there is no such thing as a completely child proof pool.
The best line of defense is to keep an eye
on children when there is a pool in the vicinity.
Please
feel free to contact the City's
Building & Safety Division at (818) 878-4225
with
any further pool safety code concerns. |
