CALABASAS GENERAL PLAN TO BE UPDATED

The Community Development Department is gearing up for an update to the City’s General Plan, and all citizens of Calabasas are encouraged to play a part in the process.

Under California law, the City’s General Plan is the foundational policy document regarding land use and development, housing, infrastructure planning, and environmental protection.  State law also requires the City to maintain a current general plan. Therefore, because the City’s general plan is more than ten years old, an update is necessary.  The process for updating the general plan will begin in January 2007, and is expected to be completed in July 2008.

The planning process will be overseen by a twenty member General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC), composed of representatives from various City commissions and the general public, and representing all geographic areas of the City.  The appointments to the GPAC will be completed in December 2006 and the GPAC will convene initially in January 2007.  In the meantime, the City Council will be asked to select the planning consultant based upon responses to a Request for Proposals at its December 6, 2006 meeting.  The planning consultant will staff and coordinate the activities of the GPAC; prepare the underlying planning studies and working documents; conduct community input and feedback exercises and workshops; prepare the environmental impact report (EIR); and eventually present the final draft plan to the Planning Commission and the City Council for their consideration.

Residents, property owners, and business owners in the City of Calabasas will play a very important role in the development of the new General Plan. They will be asked to contribute ideas, goals, and expectations for the future vision of Calabasas at public workshops, via community surveys, and at public hearings.  Please take this responsibility seriously and lend the GPAC and planning team opinions and views so that the new General Plan may appropriately reflect the hopes and expectations of the broader community.  Watch for future e.News articles, mailings, and public notices concerning general plan workshops, meetings, and exercises starting in January 2007.

DONATE AND RECYCLE EYEGLASSES AT CITY HALL

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 25 percent of the world's population needs eyeglasses. Globally, one child in four cannot see well enough to learn to read without glasses. Unfortunately, for many, a pair of glasses is both unaffordable and inaccessible.

People in some developing countries have been known to walk miles and miles to get the free eyeglasses.  Calabasas residents can help a person in need by donating glasses that are no longer in use.

Donated eyeglasses may be placed in the collection box at the Calabasas City Hall or at any City facility.  Eyeglasses received are sorted, cleaned, categorized, bagged, and boxed by the International Lions Club in preparation for shipment to developing countries.

WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOLIDAY SEASON GREENER

Americans generate about 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Years than any other time of the year, according to the California Integrated Waste Management Board. However, there are many alternatives in decorating gifts that are creative and environmentally friendly.

The beautiful colors and patterns in holiday wrapping paper contain dyes and chemicals that make it difficult to be recycled. Gift bags and pre-printed gift boxes are great alternatives to wrapping paper, especially since they are reusable. Be creative by wrapping presents in fabric or turn gift-giving into a game by hiding presents around the house. Consider giving gifts that do not generate waste such as music or sports lessons, gym memberships, or tickets for special events: concerts, the opera, a musical or sporting event.

Holiday trees can be properly cared for and recycled after the holidays: cut about one inch off the base of the tree trunk and place it in the tree holder with hot water. Also, consider purchasing an artificial tree or a live tree that can be planted after the holidays.  For those residents interested in "recycling" live Christmas trees, please remove all ornaments, cut the tree in half and place the tree in a green color yard waste bin for collection between December 26, 2006 and January 6, 2007.  Please note that flocked trees and those coated with fire retardants cannot be accepted.  Please contact G.I. Industries at (818) 782-2474 with any questions.
