AIR FORCE
ONE PAVILION OPENS IN SIMI VALLEY |
|
The Air Force One
Pavilion is now open at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi
Valley. The centerpiece of the new exhibit hall is the actual
Boeing 707 plane that served as Air Force One for seven different
presidents. First used by President Nixon in 1973, "Air Force
One 27000" flew over 1.3 million miles while carrying presidents on
missions around the world. The plane was disassembled and
transported to the Reagan Library in 2003 and is now housed in the new
Air Force One Pavilion.
In addition to the
Air Force One, the Pavilion also contains a Marine One Helicopter, a
Presidential Motorcade, an original Irish Pub visited by President and
Mrs. Reagan and moved from Ballyporeen, Ireland, and a majestic 200
foot wide by 60 foot tall glass wall that gives visitors a birds-eye
view of Simi Valley.
President and Mrs. Bush
joined Former First Lady Nancy Reagan in an official ribbon cutting ceremony (as
seen on CTV) on October 21. The pavilion is open to visitors
during regular Library hours daily from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. |

E-WASTE
AND USED OIL COLLECTION |
|
Two free and
special waste and recycling events will be taking place in November
for Calabasas residents. The city is
holding a free electronic waste collection on Saturday, November 5
at the future Calabasas Civic Center site located at Park
Sorrento behind the Commons shopping center from 10:00 a.m - 3:00 p.m.
Acceptable items include but are not limited to CD players, laptops
and personal computers, microwave ovens, printers, radios, stereos,
telephones, and VCR’s.

On Saturday, November 12, there will be a
free water based paint and used oil collection event at the
Calabasas
Tennis and Swim Center located at 23400 Park Sorrento from 10:00 a.m
- 2:00 p.m.
Through the continued
dedication and recycling efforts of area residents, the Cities of
Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Malibu, and Westlake Village
recycled 56,769 pounds of household hazardous waste during the
2004-2005 fiscal year. Residents recycled over 1,400 pounds of
antifreeze, 10,850 pounds of auto batteries, 35,140 pounds of latex
paint and over 9,000 pounds of oil products and filters. The
goal is to continue recycling used oil products and exceed this amount
for the 2005-2006 fiscal year. The City of Calabasas appreciates
the continued support of the community.
For more information about either
collection event, please contact the City of Calabasas Recycling and
Solid Waste Coordinator at (818) 878-4225. |

AMERICA RECYCLES DAY |
|
November 15 is
America Recycles Day and is a perfect time to remember that our
finite natural resources are still being depleted. When a new soda can is
created, for instance, the production process emits toxic gases that
pollute the air, land, and water. Recycling eliminates the pollution
associated with the initial stages of a product’s development, and
conserves energy and the land. In 2002, President Bush declared
November 15 as America Recycles Day to encourage all Americans to
reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Over 70 million tons of material have been diverted away from landfills
within the United States thanks to mass conservation and recycling
efforts since 2002. Collected materials are being turned into
valuable resources instead of becoming waste and taking up space in
landfills. These resources include many items available at grocery
stores, computers, and furniture.
The
City of Calabasas has implemented various programs to aid Calabasas residents
in their recycling efforts by giving prizes for the recycler of the
month and by hosting city-wide collection events for battery, electronics,
water based paint, and used oil.
More than 230 million tons of solid waste is generated in America each
year.
Recycling is therefore vital and necessary. Additional efforts are
needed to decrease the amount of waste produced — please become
involved in
America Recycles Day and continue conserving daily.
