SOKA ACQUISITION COMPLETE!
The long anticipated acquisition of the 588-acre Soka University property, also known as the King Gillette Ranch, was officially announced at a press conference on April 16 at the property by local, state and federal officials including Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Assemblymember Fran Pavley, State Parks Director Ruth Coleman and others.  Capping a thirty year effort to preserve the site in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains, the $35 million acquisition will ensure the preservation of the land's natural resources and breathtaking vistas while saving archeological treasures and Chumash settlements.  The City of Calabasas donated $850,000 towards the successful preservation effort.

8TH ANNUAL CALABASAS FINE ARTS FESTIVAL

The 8th annual Calabasas Fine Arts Festival, held on April 30 & May 1, was a tremendous success with over 200 artists displaying their works to thousands of art-seeking visitors.  The weather was perfect, the entertainment and food were memorable and the talented artists were the stars of the show.  The City would like to recognize Calabasas Arts Council Chair Laureen Morick, her staff and dedicated volunteers and the Calabasas Community Services Department for making the Fine Arts Festival such a resounding success this year.   For more information about the Fine Arts Festival or to volunteer with the Calabasas Arts Council, please call (818) 878-4225, x270.

ANIME/MANGA FILM AT LIBRARY

Come to the Calabasas Library on Saturday, May 7, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. and enjoy a sequel to the popular anime/manga film previously shown at the library. A.E. WRIGHT PEDESTRIAN FOOTBRIDGE UPDATE

California Safe Routes to School Logo with children walking and bikingThe City of Calabasas is near completion with construction plans for a pedestrian footbridge to be built across the Las Virgenes Creek adjacent to the A.E. Wright Middle School. The project is to be funded with a Federal Safe Routes to School Grant. The bridge will link the neighboring community with the school and provide convenient access for pedestrians who had to walk or be driven all the way around to the front of the school along Las Virgenes Road. The environmental document and construction plans should be ready for adoption in late May. The project will likely go to bid in June, get awarded in July and constructed by October.

RATTLESNAKE AVOIDANCE CLINIC FOR DOGS

Western Diamond Back RattlesnakeThe Mountains Restoration Trust is hosting a Rattlesnake Avoidance Clinic for Dogs (and their owners) on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday May 15 at 23097 Mulholland Highway in Calabasas (near Old Topanga Canyon Road).  The clinic will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and features Patrick Callaghan, a highly respected professional dog trainer who will utilize his proven methods to teach participating dogs to recognize and avoid rattlesnakes.  Puppies as young as 3 months are eligible and able to be taught to avoid the snakes.  Callaghan's methods are safe and humane for participating dogs and the rattlesnakes.  There is a nominal fee for participating in the clinic.  Space is limited and reservations are currently being taken at (818) 591-1707 x189.

SNOW SNOW SNOW DAY GOES TROPICAL THIS JUNE

Enjoy a summer cool down for the whole family this June when Snow Snow Snow day returns on Saturday, June 25 from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Gates Canyon Park.  Snow Snow Snow day had to be postponed last December due to heavy rains so this snow-filled event promises to be the best yet!

Thirty-five TONS of snow will be on the ground for frolicking by children of all ages.  The event will feature sledding, refreshments and crafts.  Admission is only $5 per child ages 2-12 and children under 2 are free!

MALIBU VALLEY INN & SPA DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT REMINDER

View of the project siteResidents of Calabasas are reminded that the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the proposed Malibu Valley Inn & Spa project remains available for public review, after having been released on March 10, 2005. 

Copies of the DEIR may be found at the Calabasas Public Library and in City Hall at the front counter.  Finally, any person wishing to obtain a take-home copy of the DEIR may visit the FedEx Kinkos Copy Center, located at 23305 Mulholland Drive, where individual copies (on paper or in electronic form on CD-ROM) may be purchased. 

Please note that the deadline for public comments on the DEIR is May 10, 2005.  This is a new, extended deadline, allowing for an additional 15 days of review beyond the original deadline, as permitted under the California Environmental Quality Act.  Comments should be made in writing, and should be addressed to the City of Calabasas Planning Division, to the attention of Tom Bartlett, the City Planner.  Persons submitting written comments are further advised that they should include their full name and address with their comments.

FIRE SERVICE DAY

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is hosting a Fire Service Day family event on Sunday, May 15, 2005 from noon to 5:00 p.m. at Juan Bautista de Anza Park in Calabasas.  Members of the community are welcome to come and see a variety of fire engines, a helicopter, Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) vehicles and watch exciting firefighting demonstrations.  Children will have an opportunity to try on genuine Fire Department clothing and meet "Sparky the Fire Dog."  Admission is free!  For more information, please call (310) 456-7923.

4TH OF JULY SPECTACULAR TICKET ADVISORY

Please note that tickets for the annual Calabasas July 4 Fireworks Spectacular will officially go on sale on Wednesday, June 1, 2005. The event sold out last year so get your tickets early and come to Calabasas High school for a magical evening to celebrate the 4th of July.  Beginning June 1, tickets can be purchased at City Hall, the Tennis & Swim Center, Calabasas Chamber of Commerce, de Anza Park and Creekside Park.  Tickets are $10 per person and children under 2 years of age are admitted free!  Additional information about the event will be provided in the June e.News and on the City website next month.

MALIBU FIRE PREVENTION OFFICE MOVES TO CALABASAS
The Malibu Fire Prevention Office, responsible for providing the public

RECYCLED WASTEWATER DEMONSTRATION

See how wastewater becomes beneficial recycled water by enjoying a FREE tour of the Tapia Water Reclamation Facility and the Rancho Las Virgenes Composting Facility on Saturday, May 14, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Adults and children ages 12 and over are welcome to get a rare glimpse at the mechanics of recycling water for further usage.  Reservations are required and please call (818) 251-2125 for more information.

APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2005-2006 RESIDENTIAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM
The City of Calabasas’ Residential Rehabilitation Program is accepting applications to provide assistance to low- and moderate-income homeowners for the preservation of decent, safe, and sanitary housing. Typical work includes repairs to roofs, windows, doors, plumbing, flooring, heating and electrical.  Assistance is provided in the form of a grant and/or zero interest deferred loan. 

For the 2005-2006 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program year, grants up to $5,000 and deferred zero-interest loans up to $10,000 are available.  To qualify for assistance you must be the owner occupant of a single-family home, townhouse/condominium or mobile home; the dwelling must be located within Calabasas city limits; and you cannot exceed the low to moderate income limit established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

LAS VIRGENES SCHOOL DISTRICT FORUMS

The Las Virgenes Unified School District has been holding forums for residents to learn about Las Virgenes schools and discuss education issues with school administrators.  The final forum will be held on May 2, 2005 at the Lupin Hill School in Calabasas.  Interim Superintendent Donald Zimring will host the forum which will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"BEFORE YOU HAND OVER THE KEYS..." TEEN TRAFFIC SAFETY SEMINAR
Automobile accidents are the #1 killer of teens and every parent worries about their teenager getting behind the wheel of a car for the first time.  On Monday, April 18, 2005 parents, teens and other residents came together at Calabasas High School Theater for a "Before You Hand Over the Keys...Is Your Family Prepared for a Teen Driver?" free traffic safety seminar.  Participants gained valuable information and tips from law enforcement and education experts about current traffic laws governing new teen drivers, curfew laws, student insurance rates, advice for teens before and after potential violations or crashes, liabilities to parents of reckless teen drivers and tips for driving in hazardous conditions.

24-HOUR MUNICIPAL CODE ENFORCEMENT HOTLINE
The Code Enforcement Office, part of the City of Calabasas Building and Safety Division, may now be contacted during non-business hours. The Code Enforcement Office handles violations of the Municipal CodeIf you have any conditions of an emergency nature, please contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff office.

During regular business hours please contact City Hall for referrals at (818) 878-4225.  During non-business hours please call (818) 518-3201.  Please be prepared with the following information: Your name, address and phone number, violation address and the nature of the violation. Your call will be handled in an appropriate time frame but in no case later than the next business morning.

RECYCLING HOUSEHOLD AND BUSINESS WASTE IN CALABASAS
The Calabasas Environmental Services Division would like to thank all City businesses and residents for their active participation in recycling household and business waste.  Residents may recycle batteries, inkjets, used oil and filters at a number of convenient area locations.  Old cell phones can also be recycled so please drop your old cell phone in a specially marked box in the Calabasas City Hall entrance.
