RELAY FOR
LIFE CANCER WALK |
The
Calabasas Relay for Life is a 24 hour team event that raises funds
for the American Cancer Society
beginning on June 25, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. and ending on June 26, 2005
at 10:00 a.m. The event takes place at the Calabasas High School Stadium. The
Relay is a chance for the community to come together to raise
awareness of cancer, celebrate survivors, remember those
lost to the
disease, and raise funds to fight cancer through research, education,
advocacy and patient services. Anyone is welcome to participate
by starting a team, joining an existing team or simply
donating to a team that is already set-up. Teams are
currently forming from local businesses,
student groups and residents and members are raising funds which can
be
donated securely online or by check. For more information about

SNOW SNOW SNOW DAY
RETURNS |
|
Enjoy
a summer cool down for the whole family this June when Snow Snow Snow
day returns on Saturday, June 25, 2005
from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
at
Gates Canyon Park. Snow Snow Snow day had to be postponed
last December due to heavy rains so this snow-filled event promises to
be the best yet!
Thirty-five TONS of snow will be on the ground for frolicking by
children of all ages. The event will feature sledding, refreshments
and crafts. Admission is only $5 per child ages 2-12 and
children under 2 are free! |

"STREAM
TO SEA" EARTH DAY EVENT |
|
Streams in
Calabasas are important headwaters of the Los Angeles River that end
up in the Pacific Ocean. The City of Calabasas and the
Mountains
Restoration Trust are co-sponsoring a “Stream to Sea” family fun
day
on Saturday, June 25, 1:00 p.m. -
4:00 p.m.
at the
Headwaters Corner Interpretive Center where people of all ages
can learn about water quality and the intricate connection of land
and sea through hands-on fun. Many local environmental
agencies will be participating in the event.
The
River Project
will be present to share the significance of the Los Angeles River
in our environment.
Among featured activities is a
presentation by Captain Charles Moore of
Algalita Marine Research Foundation
who will be navigating for attendees the travels of trash from Dry
Canyon Creek into the Pacific Ocean.
Nature of Wildworks
will bring critters that live in streams and
Pepperdine University’s Natural Sciences Division
will exhibit invasive critters that live by them.
Children will have a great time helping
Calabasas High School
students create a mosaic trash sculpture.
Demonstrations include water
quality sampling by
Heal the Bay
and a lesson on how watersheds work offered by
Cold
Creek Docents.
"Stream to Sea"
is a celebration of the Earth Day. The organizers hope that
people of all ages will come see what’s up with water.

WRIGHT PEDESTRIAN FOOTBRIDGE UPDATE |
|
The City of Calabasas
is near completion with construction plans for a pedestrian
footbridge to be built across the Las Virgenes Creek adjacent to the
A.E. Wright Middle School. The project is to be funded with a
Federal Safe Routes to School Grant. The bridge will link the
neighboring community with the school and provide convenient access
for pedestrians who had to walk or be driven all the way around to
the front of the school along Las Virgenes Road. The project will likely go to bid in June, get awarded in July
and constructed by October. |

SPECTACULAR TICKET ADVISORY |

for the annual Calabasas July 4 Fireworks Spectacular
went on sale on Wednesday, June 1, 2005. The event sold out last year so
get your tickets early and come to Calabasas High school for a magical
evening to celebrate the 4th of July.
Beginning June 1, tickets can be purchased at City Hall, the Tennis &
Swim Center, Calabasas Chamber of Commerce, de Anza Park and Creekside
Park. Tickets are $10 per person and children under 2 years of
age are admitted free.

OFFICE MOVES TO CALABASAS |
Fire
season has arrived in California again and it is a good time to note
that the Malibu Fire Prevention Office, responsible for providing the
public with education on fire prevention and inspections, has moved to a new
address in Calabasas.

ELECTRONIC AND HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE
COLLECTION |
|
The
City of Calabasas will be holding a ONE DAY electronic and household
hazardous waste collection on Sunday, June 5, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00
p.m. at the Calabasas Landfill (map).
Electronic waste is defined as consumer electronic equipment at or
near the end of its useful life. Computer monitors, CPUs,
televisions, VCR's, stereos, fax machines, copiers, keyboards and cell
phones are all acceptable items for the collection. Household
hazardous waste items, such as lighter fluid, antifreeze, motor oil,
transmission fluid, latex & oil based paint, paint thinner, pool
chemicals, herbicide, pesticides, aerosol products, expired
medications and household batteries will also be accepted. For

SECOND
ANNUAL SPANISH EXCHANGE PROGRAM |
|
The
Center for Cultural Interchange is currently seeking volunteer host
families in the west valley area for the period of June 28
- July 26, 2005 to provide a secure and caring home for a teenage
student from Spain. Families, with or without children, and
single people are welcome to be a host during the four week period.
The exchange program provides an opportunity for hosts to learn about
Spanish culture and participate, if desired, in fun and educational
excursions throughout the area. Ongoing support will be provided
during the four week period from the local Exchange coordinator.
Participating students from Spain will arrive with a group of students
accompanied by a bilingual adult chaperone. The students, who
will be studying English, will have many planned activities during the
week, share means, traditions and daily stories with their hosts and
arrive with their own medical insurance and spending money for their

CALABASAS
WINE TASTING EVENT |

The
10th Annual Calabasas Wine Tasting, sponsored by the
Calabasas
Chamber of Commerce, will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 from
5:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Fin's Creekside restaurant.
The wine tasting is
one of the Chamber’s most popular events and provides an opportunity
for residents to meet with local business leaders and taste quality
wines in a relaxed setting. A Silent Auction will also be held
featuring a variety
of gifts, including a flat-screen TV, and various gift certificates donated
by The
Oaks of Calabasas.

cost of the wine tasting is $40 per person. To

NATURE
DISCOVERY CAMP |
Reservations
are currently being accepted for the Mountains Restoration Trust's
"Nature Discovery Camp" which will be held in three consecutive
sessions in June, July and August. Children age 8-12 are welcome to
participate in learning experiences that focus on science and the
environment. Along with hands-on activities and sessions with
guest speakers, campers will participate in guided hikes, microscope
studies, nature crafts and games in the beautiful setting of the
Mountains Restoration Trust Interpretive Center in the Santa Monica
Mountains.
Enrollment is limited. Sessions are held Monday through Thursday
from 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The first session begins Monday,
June 27 and covers the topics of stream ecology, insects, reptiles
and amphibians. The second session begins on Monday, July 25
and covers mammals, geology and astronomy. The final sessions
starts on Monday, August 22 and includes Native American culture,

APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2005-2006 RESIDENTIAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM |
The City of Calabasas’
Residential Rehabilitation Program is accepting applications to
provide assistance to low- and moderate-income homeowners for the
preservation of decent, safe, and sanitary housing. Typical work
includes repairs to roofs, windows, doors, plumbing, flooring, heating
and electrical. Assistance is provided in the form of a grant and/or
zero interest deferred loan.
For the 2005-2006
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program year,
grants up to $5,000 and deferred zero-interest loans up to $10,000 are
available. To qualify for assistance you must be the owner occupant
of a single-family home, townhouse/condominium or mobile home; the
dwelling must be located within Calabasas city limits; and you cannot
exceed the low to moderate income limit established by the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

GENERAL MEETING & TRAINING |

The City of
Calabasas Emergency Response Program (CERP) will be holding two basic
training sessions on Saturday, June 11, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00
p.m. and Saturday June 18,
2005 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and their quarterly meeting on Monday, June 20, 2005 at 7:30 p.m.
all in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Any resident
interested in becoming a member of CERP will need to attend both
of the Basic Training classes. The general meeting is open to the
public and members of volunteer emergency response groups in the area.

CALABASAS
INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION |
|
Register
now for the
Calabasas Invitational Golf Tournament,
a
Talbert Family Foundation Event that will
benefit the Amanda Vorhies / Gates Canyon Park Fund. The
tournament will take place on Monday, August 29, 2005 at the
Calabasas Golf
and Country Club. A dinner and silent auction will follow an
afternoon of golf.
This year, along with supporting families
who have cancer, the
Talbert Family Foundation has embarked on a
fundraising effort to bring a
Shane’s Inspiration Park to Calabasas
and its surrounding communities. Proceeds from the Calabasas
Classic Gold Tournament will go towards the construction of this
playground.
The mission of
Shane's Inspiration
is to bring a universally accessible
playground that allows children with disabilities to play side by side
with their able bodied peers.
Amanda Vorhies, one the Talbert Family Foundation’s newest “TFF
Kids," is a 2 ½ year old little girl who is full of life and has an
amazing personality. She also has had an amazing journey in her short
life. Born with a condition called Hydrocephalus, Amanda's brain
was damaged at birth by fluid that her body was unable to process.
Shane's Inspiration is intended to allow children, like Amanda, to
have a safe playground where kids can be kids and play. For more

FINAL
CIVIC CENTER DESIGN PLANS APPROVED |
|

On June 1, 2005,
the City Council authorized staff to enter into final design on the
Civic Center Project. The next major step after completion of this
milestone will selecting a general contractor and groundbreaking in
Spring 2006.
The final design phase will be a busy one for the City as final
interior design selections are made. The City will also prepare
to issue bonds and train staff for their duties and assignments as the
project gets under construction. Come by City hall and look at the
beautiful model of the project (left), which will be on display.
On
Friday, May 13, 2005, the Civic Center Task Force was pleased to
welcome Richard Hall, Program Director for the
Office
of State Library Construction (far right, with Council member
Jonathon Wolfson and City CFO Gary Lysik). Mr. Hall is the City’s
liaison for our State Library Bond Grant, and oversees all of the
drawing submittals made in order to meet the City's grant
requirements. For the first time, Mr. Hall was able to tour the site
and got a first hand feel of the beautiful setting for this State
Library. While in Calabasas, he signed the City's ceremonial check
proudly displayed on the wall of the CFO’s office. Mr. Hall will be
back to join the City next spring when we celebrate the
groundbreaking! |
