PARKLINK AND BEACH BUS ADD TO CALABASAS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Getting around Calabasas, going to and from the beach and touring the Santa Monica Mountains with public transportation is easier than ever this summer.  In addition to the free Calabasas Trolley that runs year-round a fixed route around Calabasas from Fridays through Sundays, the City’s annual summer Beach Bus and a new shuttle service from the National Park Service called Parklink will expand public transportation options for residents.  Parklink allows riders to park at a number of parking sites along the route and ride all day to recreation stops throughout the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, including Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas, for only $5.  The Parklink shuttle has a stop at Zuma Beach in Malibu where residents can transfer to the Calabasas Beach Bus.  The Beach Bus, which runs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays until August 26, drops off and picks up passengers at five convenient locations in Calabasas and Zuma Beach in Malibu for only $1 each way.  The synergy of the Trolley service, Beach bus and Parklink should allow Calabasas residents to park, walk and ride to recreation spots leaving less traffic and congestion on the roads this summer.  For more information about Parklink, please visit www.nps.gov.

VICTORY TRAILHEAD TO OPEN AT FORMER AHMANSON RANCH PRESERVE

The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority invite the public to celebrate the opening of Victory Trailhead at the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve (formerly Ahmanson Ranch) on Saturday, July 2 at noon.  In 2003,  the long-awaited purchase of the 2,983-acre Ahmanson Ranch, at the western edge of the San Fernando Valley, was completed after a heroic effort by numerous parties. For more information, including directions to the Victory Trailhead, please see the official event flyer at the Conservancy website.

RELAY FOR LIFE RAISES HOPES AND DONATIONS

The third annual Calabasas Relay for Life raised over $120,000 for cancer research during a 24 hour walk that stretched from June 25-26, 2005.  The 36-team event, which raised funds for the American Cancer Society, took place at the Calabasas High School Stadium where over 400 participants took shifts walking the track for 24 hours.  The Relay is a great opportunity for the community to come together to raise awareness of cancer, celebrate survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and raise funds to fight cancer through research, education, advocacy and patient services.

Participation in the Calabasas Relay for Life doubled from the previous year and organizers hope that even more residents, businesses and student groups will form teams and raise money for next year's Relay.  For more information about Calabasas Relay for Life, or to donate to the American Cancer Society, please visit the official Calabasas Relay for Life website

NEED HIGHWAY ASSISTANCE? DIAL #399

If help is needed on the highway, motorists can now use their cell phones as a callbox and report freeway damage or request assistance.

The #399 service is fully-staffed by English and Spanish speaking operators and is available to provide translation assistance in over 150 languages and equipped to serve the deaf, hearing and speech impaired. The service is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week by cell phones in the Los Angeles area.  Please note that #399 does not replace 911.  Use 911 if you need medical, fire department or law enforcement response. But for all non-emergency freeway assistance requests, motorists can now dial #399.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION

2005-2006 SCHOOL YEAR TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

It’s never too early or late to make commuting arrangements for the 2005-2006 school year.  The first few weeks of school are hectic; a little planning now can greatly relieve the transportation aspect of the school year.

There are a number of good reasons to adopt these alternatives to driving to school alone everyday:

  • Reducing stress: Less ‘stressed out’ parents are safer drivers;

  • Reducing time:  Fewer vehicles around school at peak hours saves everyone time;

  • Increased safety:  Children have a less congested school campus;

  • Economy: Everyone saves gas, wear and tear on their vehicle;

  • Teamwork and cooperation:  Good values to teach children;

  • Environmentally friendly:  Help the environment by reducing stagnant vehicle emissions around children.

Consider these alternatives to driving your children alone in your car every day: bus service, walking pools, carpooling, and the City of Calabasas shuttle.

CALABASAS INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION

Register now for the Calabasas Invitational Golf Tournament, a Talbert Family Foundation Event that will benefit  the Amanda Vorhies / Gates Canyon Park Fund.  The tournament will take place on Monday, August 29, 2005 at the Calabasas Golf and Country Club.  A dinner and silent auction will follow an afternoon of golf.

This year, along with supporting families who have cancer, the
Talbert Family Foundation has embarked on a fundraising effort to bring a Shane’s Inspiration Park to Calabasas and its surrounding communities.  Proceeds from the Calabasas Classic Gold Tournament will go towards the construction of this playground.

The mission of Shane's Inspiration is to bring a universally accessible playground that allows children with disabilities to play side by side with their able bodied peers.  Amanda Vorhies, one the Talbert Family Foundation’s newest “TFF Kids," is a 2 ½ year old little girl who is full of life and has an amazing personality.  She also has had an amazing journey in her short life.  Born with a condition called Hydrocephalus, Amanda's brain was damaged at birth by fluid that her body was unable to process.  Shane's Inspiration is intended to allow children, like Amanda, to have a safe playground where kids can be kids and play. For more information about the Calabasas Classic Golf Tournament, please contact Julie at the Talbert Family Foundation or visit the event website.
