CALABASAS
INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION |
|
The
Calabasas Invitational Golf Tournament,
a
Talbert Family Foundation Event that will
benefit the Amanda Vorhies/Gates Canyon Park Fund, will take place on Monday, August 29, 2005 at the
Calabasas Golf
and Country Club. A dinner and silent auction will follow an
afternoon of golf.
This year, along with supporting families
who have cancer, the
Talbert Family Foundation has embarked on a
fundraising effort to bring a
Shane’s Inspiration Park to Calabasas
and its surrounding communities. Proceeds from the Calabasas
Classic Gold Tournament will go towards the construction of this
playground.
The mission of
Shane's Inspiration
is to bring a universally accessible
playground that allows children with disabilities to play side by side
with their able bodied peers.
Amanda Vorhies, one of the Talbert Family Foundation’s newest “TFF
Kids," is a 2 ½ year old little girl who is full of life and has an
amazing personality. She also has had an amazing journey in her short
life. Born with a condition called Hydrocephalus, Amanda's brain
was damaged at birth by fluid that her body was unable to process.
Shane's Inspiration is intended to allow children, like Amanda, to
have a safe playground where kids can be kids and play. For more
information about the Calabasas Classic Golf Tournament, please
contact Julie
at the Talbert Family Foundation or
visit the event website to
register. |

PARKLINK AND BEACH BUS ADD TO CALABASAS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION |
Getting
around Calabasas, going to and from the beach
and touring the Santa
Monica Mountains with public
transportation is easier than ever this
summer. In addition to the free Calabasas Shuttle that runs
year-round a fixed route around Calabasas from Fridays through
Sundays, the City’s annual
summer Beach Bus and a new shuttle service from the National Park
Service called
Parklink
will expand public transportation options for residents.
Parklink
allows riders to park at a number of parking sites along the route
and
ride all day to recreation stops throughout the
Santa Monica Mountains National
Recreation Area, including Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas, for
only $5. The Parklink
shuttle has a stop at Zuma Beach in Malibu
where residents can transfer to the
Calabasas Beach Bus. The Beach Bus, which runs on Mondays,
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays until August 26, drops off and picks
up passengers at five convenient locations in Calabasas and Zuma Beach
in Malibu for only $1 each way. The synergy of the Calabasas
Shuttle service,
Beach bus and Parklink should allow Calabasas residents to park, walk
and ride to recreation spots leaving less traffic and congestion on
the roads this summer. For more information about Parklink, please
visit www.nps.gov. |

2005-2006 SCHOOL YEAR
TRANSPORTATION PLANNING |
|
It’s never too early or late to make
commuting arrangements for the 2005-2006 school year. The first few
weeks of school are hectic; a little planning now can greatly
relieve the transportation aspect of the school year.
There are a number of good reasons to
adopt these alternatives to driving to school alone everyday:
-
Reducing
stress: Less ‘stressed out’ parents are safer drivers;
-
Reducing time:
Fewer vehicles around school at peak hours saves everyone time;
-
Increased
safety: Children have a less congested school campus;
-
Economy:
Everyone saves gas, wear and tear on their vehicle;
-
Teamwork and
cooperation: Good values to teach children;
-
Environmentally friendly: Help the environment by reducing
stagnant vehicle emissions around children.
Consider these alternatives to
driving your children alone in your car every day:
bus service,
walking pools, carpooling, and the
City of Calabasas
shuttle. |

PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY REGARDING WEST NILE VIRUS |
|
In 2004,
West Nile Virus
activity
was detected in all 58 counties in California and 830 human infections
were identified. Through the first six months of 2005, surveillance
efforts have shown that the virus remains active in all areas of Los
Angeles County and that the likelihood of becoming infected is
expected to remain similar to that of 2004. In 2004, there have been
309 human cases of West Nile Virus reported from Los Angeles County,
including 13 fatalities.
West Nile Virus is primarily
transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most
individuals who are infected with West Nile Virus will not experience
any illness. Others will have only mild symptoms, such as fever,
headaches and body aches. Less than one percent of individuals,
primarily the elderly and those with lowered immune systems, will
develop serious illness that will require medical attention.
Since it was first detected in the
United States in New York in 1999, West Nile Virus has spread to 48
states. Nationwide, 2,470 human cases of West Nile infections were
reported last year, including 88 deaths. In comparison, there are
20,000 to 35,000 deaths annually in the U.S. as a result of the common
influenza virus. Individuals can reduce their risk of mosquito-borne
diseases by taking these precautions:
-
Avoid spending time outside when
mosquitoes are most active, especially at dawn and dusk;
-
When outdoors, wear long pants
and long sleeved shirts;
-
Apply insect repellent according
to label instructions;
-
Make sure doors and windows have
tight fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or
holes; and
-
Eliminate all sources of standing
water on your property that can support mosquito breeding.
Birds play an important role in
maintaining and spreading West Nile Virus. Mosquitoes acquire the
virus from infected birds and then transmit the virus to people.
Evidence of the virus in dead birds is often the first indication that
West Nile Virus has been introduced into a new region. Individuals
should take note of the bird’s location and its condition before
calling for further instructions. The bird should show no sign of
decomposition or maggot infestation. While there’s no evidence that
people can get the virus from handling live or dead infected birds,
individuals should not attempt to catch or handle them.
The public can become part of the
state’s monitoring effort for West Nile Virus by reporting any crows,
raven, magpies, jays or hawks that may have been dead for less than 24
hours to the California Department of Health Services
(1-877-WNV-BIRD).
If residents are bothered by
mosquitoes, need assistance with eliminating breeding sources on or
around your property, or if you would like to obtain mosquito fish,
please contact the
Los Angeles
County West Vector Control District
at
(310) 915-7370. |

RECYCLE
OLD CELL PHONES |
|
Because all cell
phones and their batteries contain toxic materials, they should not be
thrown away. Charitable recycling groups make a donation payment for
each cell phone collected, regardless of the age or working condition
of the phone. So, what happens to used cell phones? Many are
refurbished and provided to shelters for cost-free 911 (emergency
only) services. Obsolete phones are destroyed in an
environmentally-responsible manner.
Don’t put yesterday’s phones into
tomorrow’s landfills. Recycle them at Calabasas designated collection
sites:
-
Agoura Hills /
Calabasas Community Center (27040 Malibu Hills Rd)
-
Albertson's (26521
Agoura Road)
-
Calabasas High

-

-
