Method Fest Film
Festival
April 1-8, 2005
"If it can be written,
or thought, it can be filmed."
- Stanley Kubrick
"A
large part of acting is just pretending. You get to work with these other
great make-believers, all making believe as hard as they can. What I
learned most from my father wasn't anything he said; it was just the way
he behaved. He loved his work so much that, whenever he came on set, he
brought that with him, and other people rose to it."

FESTIVAL - APRIL 30 & MAY 1, 2005 |
|
The
8th annual Calabasas Arts & Crafts Festival will be held on Saturday
and Sunday, April 30 & May 1, 2005. The 2005 festival promises to
be the best yet with live music, great food and fantastic arts and
crafts from over 200 premier artists. One of the booths at the
festival will be occupied by
Studio Chambon,
a Palm Springs ceramic art studio created by Jim Babb and Philippe
Chambon.
Working together,
the men produce hand-built ceramic pieces using flat slabs of clay
which are assembled, decorated and glazed entirely by hand. Jim
and Philippe use no molds or factory designs so each piece is unique.
The artists accept special orders for those customers with specific
requirements for color, size or shape and everything made at
Studio Chambon
is truly original.

festival. The site is adjacent to the

CHILDHOOD OBESITY EPIDEMIC |
|
California State Assemblywoman
Fran Pavley recently attended an informational hearing organized
by the Joint Committees on Health, Education, Housing and Community
Development titled,
"Tackling the Childhood Obesity Epidemic."
Assemblywoman Pavley passed on some important information presented
by Dr. Richard Jackson, Public Health Officer of the California
Department of Health Services. Dr. Jackson reports that: 1/3 of girls born in 2000 will be diabetic
by age 40; teenagers drink two times as much soda than milk than they
did twenty years ago; there are 17 teaspoons of sugar in a 20-ounce
soda which requires four hours of exercise to burn off; the average 11
year-old boy is eleven pounds heavier in 2005 than in 1973; and about
9 million American children over the age of 6 are currently considered
obese. Health risks associated with obesity in children include
type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, joint and bone problems, gall
stones and depression. Assemblywoman Pavley urges the community
to encourage children to use of bike paths, neighborhood parks and school
playgrounds. She also encourages schools to help get kids active with
walk-to-school programs, after school recreational activities,
physical education classes and healthy food served on campus.
Please note that Assemblywoman Pavley will be in Calabasas on
Saturday, April 2 at the Calabasas Farmers' Market from 9 a.m. - 11
a.m. to meet with local residents and discuss their concerns.
The Market is located at 23504 Calabasas Road in Calabasas. |

AUTOMATED
EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) AVAILABLE AT
CITY HALL |
|
The City of
Calabasas has installed an AED unit in the City Hall lobby for use by
trained individuals.
What is an AED?
The Automated
External Defibrillator (AED) is a computerized medical device that can
check a person’s heart rhythm. It can recognize a rhythm that
requires a shock and will advise the rescuer when a shock is needed or
if they should continue with the CPR. Immediate recognition and
care is necessary to increase the chance of a victim’s survival if
they should have a sudden cardiac arrest.
The combination of CPR and early defibrillation (AED) greatly
increases the victim’s chance of surviving.
On February 22, 2005, six City Hall
volunteer responders completed a 4-hour CPR and AED course through the
American Heart Association. In addition, there are several other
trained individuals in CPR/AED and First Aid in City Hall.
Future locations for the AED units include the Calabasas Tennis and
Swim Center, Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center and De Anza
Park. Volunteers at these sites will be trained prior to receiving
the AED unit. |

THANKS TO THE LOS ANGELES
FIRE DEPARTMENT |
|

The
City of Calabasas expresses thanks to the
City of Los Angeles
Fire Department and paramedic Alan Albera. Last summer, Calabasas
Community Development Director Maureen Tamuri joined the “B”
platoon in obtaining her re-certification as a Emergency Medical
Technician (EMT-B). The certification, which is issued through
the State of California and the Los Angeles County Department of Heath
Services, is given to individuals who go through an extensive initial
training program in emergency medical procedures and receive updated
training and testing every two years. Maureen trained with 40
firefighters from every rank and area of the City of Los Angeles
undergoing refresher coursework and skills testing. Areas reviewed
include CPR,
defibrillator
use,
medical emergencies and trauma. The L.A. City Fire Department
responds to almost 750,000 calls per year. The 1038 sworn
firefighters and 207 paramedics provide emergency response to the
City’s 3.7 million residents. In the event of a major disaster, they
will provide mutual aid services to the community of Calabasas, just
as they did in the 1994 Malibu fire. |
