FALL FAMILY FAIRE
Bring your family to The Calabasas Fall Family Faire at scenic Juan Bautista de Anza Park, located at 3701 Lost Hills Road in Calabasas, on Sunday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and join the community for a fun-filled day to celebrate the fall season.  There will be Halloween carnival games, costume contests, hands-on kid’s arts and crafts, live entertainment, business showcase opportunities, a car exhibit and festival food.  And best of all, admission is free!  Activities cost between $0.25-$1.00, so don’t miss out on the fun!

David Carradine, the star of "Kung Fu" who recently appeared in the film "Kill Bill," will perform with Los Angeles alternative band Soul Dogs.  Music groups from local schools will also appear throughout the day. VOTE!
Election Day is just around the corner!  Polls in California will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2.  The last day to register to vote in California was October 18.  Registered voters who need to find their polling place can call the Voter Assistance Hotline at 1-800-345-VOTE. To get more information on candidates, propositions, polling places and general election information visit the Secretary of State's website.

The County of Los Angeles will be providing early voting from October 20-29 in the multi-purpose room at the Calabasas Library.  Los Angeles County registered voters may cast their vote through touch-screen ballot machines.  For more information visit www.LAVote.net.

Absentee ballots may still be requested until Tuesday, October 26.  All absentee ballots must be accepted by an election official by 8 p.m. on election day.  For more information, please visit the County of Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder Absentee Voting web page.

BUILDING AND SAFETY DEPARTMENT WEB PAGE


The Building and Safety Department for the City of Calabasas has recently unveiled a new web page that provides answers to many of the frequently asked questions presented by both homeowners and contractors.  Most of the department's informational handouts may be downloaded and printed to review at your convenience. Building permit application forms are also available at this page and permits via FAX are available for certain applications.  Visit the website or call (818) 878-4225 for more information.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS ON HALLOWEEN

Daylight savings time ends early on Halloween morning this year so remember to set your clocks back an hour on Sunday, October 31 at 2 a.m.  The sun will be setting around 5 p.m. that evening so parents should accompany children as they trick-or-treat, make sure costumes are safe and have bright colors or reflective tape so they are visible at night, and make sure all candy pieces are wrapped before children eat them.  Click here for more Halloween safety tips.  Have a safe and happy Halloween, and enjoy the extra hour of sleep!

SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is holding an Open House on Saturday, October 23, 2004 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station located at 27050 Agoura Road in Agoura.  This family-friendly event will feature displays and demonstrations from Sheriff's Department and will feature special appearances by the L.A. County Fire Department helicopter and L.A. County search dogs.  There will also be special activities for children as well as food and beverages made available by local vendors.

Parking will be available at the commercial buildings across the street from the Sheriff's station.  For handicapped access concerns, special arrangements or further information, please contact Deputy Brownell at (818) 878-1808.

TIPS FOR FIRE PREVENTION
Last fall, Southern California witnessed some of the worst fires in recent history.  In order to prevent such disasters from occurring in Calabasas this season, citizens should take all necessary precautions to fire proof their homes and businesses.  Click here for fire safety tips from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

There are many way increase fire safety including clearing dry grass and shrubs around residences. The LA Bureau of Street Services in abatement of City-Wide Nuisances, Fire Prevention and Weed Abatement (in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Fire Department) mails notices to property owners regarding clearance requirements, and due dates for performing proper weed abatement.  Please contact the Planning Department for local permitting requirements on clearing certain types of vegetation particularly Oak trees and Scrub Oak (shrubs), which are protected under the City’s Municipal Code.  For more information, call (818) 878-4225 and ask for Glenn Michitsch.

CERT CLASSES

An emergency could strike at any time, so please make sure that you, your family and your neighborhood are prepared and safe.  Learn steps that you can take to ensure your family's safety by signing up for CERT (Community Emergency Readiness Team) classes.  CERT Training will be taking place right here in Calabasas, so mark your calendars to take advantage of this opportunity to gain valuable knowledge to protect you and your community. This class will be held at the Countrywide facility, located at 4500 Park Granada, and Countrywide will be providing refreshments as well.  The Los Angeles County Fire Department will be providing instructors and class materials; Captain William McCloud of the L.A. County Fire Department is the CERT Program Coordinator and is scheduled to be the primary instructor for this class.  Anyone is welcome to join these informative classes.  For more information or to sign up for the classes, contact Maria Grycan, Community Services Representative for the L.A. CARPOOL REGISTRATION WEBSITE

Getting to and from school has just been made easier with the City’s new School Pool carpool registration website.  Parents and students can now organize a carpool through a new web-based questionnaire.  The information collected online helps create a carpool proximity list for parents and students who drive to school, with tools to create carpools and reduce traffic on the roads.

PROPOSITION 1A

Proposition 1A is an initiative that will be on the November ballot that will prevent the State Legislature from taking and using funds originally committed to local governments.  Prop. 1A also requires the State to reimburse local governments for the cost of programs and services it mandates cities, counties and special districts provide.  This measure would allow for flexibility in the event of a future state fiscal emergency, since the State may borrow local government funds, only if the Governor declares a fiscal necessity and 2/3 of the legislature approve.  All funds would be required to be repaid within three years.  According to the official ballot label for Prop. 1A, it “Ensures local property tax and sales tax revenues remain with local government thereby safeguarding funding for public safety, health, libraries, parks, and other local services. Provisions can only be suspended if the Governor declares a fiscal necessity and two-thirds of the Legislature concurs.”  For more information on Prop. 1A, the Secretary of State lists the following contact information for the proponents and opponents of the measure:

INAUGURAL “CALABASAS CLASSIC” 5K AND 10K RUNS

Registration is underway for the inaugural Calabasas Classic 5K and 10K runs sponsored by the Talbert Family Foundation, which will be held on Saturday, November 13 and wind through scenic Calabasas Park.  The course is relatively flat and begins at the Calabasas Library then takes runners through tree-lined streets around scenic Calabasas Lake, with a double loop course for 10k participants.  The proceeds will support the Patient Care and Research for Blood-Related Cancers.  The 5Kand 10K entry fees are $25, if paid by October 30, and $35 up to and including race day.  Entry fees for the “Kids 1-Miler” (for ages 7-12) and the “Family Fun Run” (all ages) are $10 before Oct. 30 and $15 thereafter. The fees include short-sleeved t-shirts or tank tops, post race food and beverages.  The 5K is set for 8 a.m., the 10K begins at 9 a.m., and the other two family runs are slotted to take place after 11 a.m.  There will also be a series of “kiddie dashes” sponsored by Sports Plus Day Camp.  Sean English, an Iron Man Brazil finisher will entertain at the start/finish line throughout the event and Diedre Downs, Miss America 2005, will present the awards to participants racing in the "Family Fun Run."  Click here for additional information on the Calabasas Classic, including directions, course map, sponsors, accommodations and additional fund-raising opportunities.  Don’t forget to register early and come out for this community-wide charity event!
