FIRE SEASON IS HERE EARLY!

Summer is approaching fast in Calabasas and the temperatures are soaring.  This is a good time to make sure that you've taken proper fire precautions in your home and workplace.  For information on fire preparation, brush clearance and how to stay safe in the event of a fire, contact the LA County Fire Department at (323) 881-2411.

CITY WELCOMES NEW COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Maureen Tamuri is the city’s newly-hired Community Development Director, who joined us on April 19, 2004 from the city of Los Angeles.  With a background in architecture, public transportation service, and parks and recreation, Maureen brings her innovation and love for city operations to Calabasas.  She has already taken an active role in helping to achieve the construction of our new Civic Center and says that she is looking forward to working with our Councilmembers and getting to know everyone in our city.

TRAFFIC BUSTERS TO AWARD CHILDREN
If your children have been participating in the “Walking Warriors” program at Chaparral, Bay Laurel, and Lupin Hill elementary schools, be sure to come to the Traffic and Transportation Commission meeting on Tuesday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.  There will be a special Traffic Busters Awards Ceremony for the children who participate in these programs which help reduce traffic and pollution in our city, and foster an appreciation for the fresh air and exercise enjoyed by walking to school.  For additional information call (818) 878-4225 and ask for the Traffic and Transportation Department.

SMART GARDENING WORKSHOP
April showers bring May flowers!  Springtime is here and if you want your gardens to look their best, come to the free Smart Gardening Workshop on Saturday, May 8 at Gates Canyon Park.  The workshop will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and will give you tips on how to save time and money, improve your yard and garden, recycle yard waste and kitchen scraps, and reduce waste going to our landfills.  Come ready to learn other valuable gardening skills such as backyard composting, worm composting, and grass recycling.  All these techniques will save water and help prevent fires.  Best of all, you will have a chance to win a free backyard composting bin or a worm composting bin with complimentary worms.  For additional information contact the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works at 1(888) CLEAN LA.

HAZARDOUS WASTE CLEAN UP

If you have any hazardous waste materials that you want to get rid of in a safe way, the Household Hazardous Waste Collection program is here to help. Bring your items to Calabasas City Hall, 26135 Mureau Road, on the second Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Waste will also be collected at other local sites throughout the month.  The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works will collect used oil, oil filters, anti-freeze, and latex paint for free.  For more information on recycling locations and reducing hazardous waste at home click here.

get out in the fresh air and join Walking Wednesdays

In an effort to cut down on the traffic jams that occur in front of Calabasas schools every morning and afternoon, the City Council has proclaimed the first Wednesday of every month a Walking Wednesday.  On this day all students are asked to walk, bike, and/or carpool to school. Students will receive rewards for participation as well as exercising and spending valuable time with their friends and family.

TIPS to get out early: Make your lunch the night before;
                              Set out your clothes the night before;
                              Put all of your homework and books in 
                              your backpack Tuesday night.

COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE
Did you come across old clothes or possessions that you just don’t use anymore while doing your spring cleaning?  Now is your chance to get rid of these things at the Annual Community Garage Sale.  It will be held on Saturday, May 15 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center.  Admission is free to the public, but participation is limited due to the popularity of this event, so reserve your spot early!  You can do this in person at the Community Center, 27040 Malibu Hills Road, or call (818) 880-2993, or click here to register via the internet.

LEONIS ADOBE MEMBERSHIP GARDEN PARTY
Mark your calendar for the Leonis Adobe Museum May Membership party at the Calabasas Creek Rose Garden on Saturday, May 15 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The membership fee is $15.00 and includes free museum admission, event discounts, and more.  Family admission packages are also available.  There will be an afternoon wine and cheese reception with entertainment following the morning’s festivities.  Please RSVP to Angela Schwanz at (818) 222-6511 or email leonisadobe@aol.com in order to attend this event that is sure to be a memorable one.

ANNUAL POPS CONCERT

Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 6 and come join the Calabasas Chamber Orchestra for an evening of music at the 9th Annual Outdoor Pops Concert led by Conductor Tony Kissane.  The event will be held at the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center, Center Court, at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.  For more information, click here, or call (818) 594-4011.  This event is sure to be as delightful as always.

MATURE DRIVER CLASSES

here's no time like the present to refresh your driving skills.  Come to De Anza Park on Saturday, May 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to take advantage of the Mature Driver Class.  The class costs $10.00.  For registration information, call (818) 880-6461.

DONATE BOOKS TO OUR TROOPS
If you have extra books lying around your house that you don’t need, consider donating them to our troops in Iraq who could use the entertainment and relaxation.  Both the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center and the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center will be collecting your donations.  Richard Robinson, a local resident, is collecting the books and plans to deliver them to Camp Pendelton Naval Base in San Diego for shipment overseas next month.  The books must be paperback since the soldiers need to carry them in their backpacks where space is limited.   Just drop your donated books in the specially marked containers at the Community Center or the Tennis & Swim Center.  They are much appreciated!  For additional information call the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center at (818) 880-2993 or the Tennis & Swim Center at (818) 222-2782.

LIFEGUARDING COURSES

As summer is soon approaching, you may want to consider taking lifeguarding lessons.  The Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center will be offering courses that will train you the safe way to have summer fun.  Lessons will be held from May 17-21 and on the 24-25 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  There is a $100 fee and an additional $50 material fee.  For more information, please call the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center at (818) 222-2782.  Hope to see you there!

CHAPARRAL JOG-A-THON
On Wednesday, April 7, approximately 500 students participated in the Chaparral Jog-A-Thon fundraiser, an annual event for over 18 years.  The students walk en masse from Chaparral Elementary School to Calabasas High School.  Once at the high school, the different grades circle the track, cheered on by their classmates in the bleachers.  Students raised over $20,000 from this year's event, which will go to support the library, physical education programs, and art programs at Chaparral Elementary.  City staff and Pepperdine students lent a hand on the morning of the event.  A BIG “Thank You” goes to the tireless efforts of the volunteers, staff, and kids who made this year's jog-a-thon a great success!

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WORKSHOP

The Calabasas Public Safety Commission, in concert with Haven Hills, Inc. will be conducting a community workshop on domestic violence. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 18 at the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center and will begin at 7:00 p.m.  Attendees will be educated on the issue of domestic violence and its impact on the individual and the family.  There will also be information on the programs and services available, and participants will be given materials on what they can do to help.  For information on the workshop, please contact Haven Hills, Inc. at (818) 887-7481.

COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD PRESENTED
Nelly deVinck and Pamela Evans were honored at the April 27 Traffic & Transportation Commission meeting with a Community Achievement Award from Assemblywoman Fran Pavley’s office for their outstanding work with the Walk to School Program at Lupin Hill and Bay Laurel Elementary schools, respectively.   They organized the Walk program, which is becoming a Wednesday tradition throughout the city, and handed out incentives to the students such as stickers, pencils, coloring books and ice cream voucher certificates.  Our community acknowledges and truly appreciates their efforts.  Thank you so much Nelly and Pam.  You did a great job!

WHAT'S ON CTV?

Be sure to tune in to CTV on cable channel 3 in Calabasas or online webstreaming to watch your favorite CTV programs.  New programs this month include:

Calabasas, A Living History - Join host John Loesing on this new program as he explores the history of Calabasas and the people who helped make it a City.  This month Loesing interviews Roy LaViolette (pictured at left), chief engineer of CTV - The Calabasas Channel.  LaViolette describes his early days in radio engineering recording for renowned artists such as Liberace and Harry James, his memories of Pearl Harbor, and his participation in helping the City of Calabasas incorporate.

Preview, An Eye on The Arts
- The latest show on CTV highlights arts and culture in our creative community.  This month our host Laureen Morick visits the successful Art Festival in its seventh year in Calabasas.  Join Morick as she talks with several renowned artists, listens to live music at the festival, and watches the spectacular roving performers.  Each month on this program, Morick will talk with artists, restaurants, landscapers, architects, and other members of our local, creative, and cultural community. 
 


Your City, Your Issues - This month host John Loesing interviews Lost Hills Sheriff Captain Tom Martin and LA County Assistant Fire Chief Reginald Lee on public safety and fire safety issues in the community.  Don't miss this opportunity to find out tips on keeping your home and business safe from fire during the dry and windy weather.
