CITY
INSTALLS SMART CROSSWALK |
|

The City installed its first Smart Crosswalk on Mulholland Highway
at Eddingham Road on
February 18, 2004.
What
makes the crosswalk so smart is a system that alerts drivers to the
presence of pedestrians with flashing lights installed in the
crosswalk. When the crosswalk button is pressed, the lights
begin to flash warning oncoming traffic that pedestrians are crossing.
Pedestrians have thirty-five seconds to walk from one side of the
street to the other.
The City of Calabasas
chose Mulholland Highway and Eddingham Road as a location for the
first smart crosswalk due the high amount of pedestrian traffic,
particularly school children attending Chaparral Elementary School and
the recently opened A.C. Stelle Middle School.
The Traffic and Transportation Department plans on installing more
smart crosswalks in the City and would like to
receive feedback on the new device from students, other
pedestrians and drivers.

ELECTION TRIVIA ANSWERS |

What determines the number of
electoral votes a state may have?
A state may have a number of electoral votes equal to the number
of Senators and Representatives. The exception is the
District of Columbia which would have the number of Senators and
Representatives it would be given if it were a state; however, the
number may not be more than the smallest state.
How does a
party become qualified to compete in presidential elections?
The party must have received four percent of the state's previous
gubernatorial or senatorial elections. That's why you may
see a party running in one primary and not another.
Why is Election Day on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in
November?

At first there was no set day for national elections. Each
state set its
own time, as long as it was at least 34 days before the first
Wednesday in December. In 1845 an act was passed setting the
current day. Originally, the day was set to prevent
elections from occurring on the first day of November which was a
busy day for merchants. Mondays were not chosen because of
the long distances some voters had to travel. Travel on
Sunday, a day of rest, was discouraged.
Can the right to vote be taken away?
Almost all states in
the U.S. deny current prisoners the right to vote. Approximately
thirty states disenfranchise felons on parole and those on
probation.
In some states, convicted felons permanently lose their right to
vote.
