COMPREHENSIVE VEHICLE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

The City of Calabasas has a new plan to encourage kids to take the bus to school as part of a city-wide traffic reduction effort.   For Calabasas residents, rates have decreased from $325 a semester to only $99 per semester for daily roundtrip rides, with a one-way rate of only $65. There is a $49 discounted price for students that take the early busTo make riding the bus a considerably more enjoyable experience, there is now a maximum of two riders per seat.  Ten new buses have been added to Calabasas to facilitate students’ comfort, as well as many new stops.  Occasional chaperones will ride the bus to monitor student behavior, and  there will be incentives to ride the bus such as free gift cards.  With the revamping of school bus transportation in Calabasas, the City hopes to make the bus a fun, safe, and affordable way to get students to school and alleviate morning traffic congestion.  Sign up now while space is still available!  View our School Bus Public Service Announcement and our Calabasas School Bus and Traffic Safety - A Bold New Plan half-hour special online now with our new CTV archiving software!
Call the Calabasas Traffic Department immediately for more information at (818) 878-4225.

TRAFFIC UPDATE

Las Virgenes Off-Ramp Widening Done!
The City’s Transportation/Intergovernmental Relations Department just completed the construction on U.S. 101 Northbound off-ramp at Las Virgenes Road.  The widening project now accommodates one dedicated left-turn lane, one left-turn/through lane, and a dedicated right turn lane.  The off-ramp was previously operating at a Level-of-Service (LOS) D during peak a.m. traffic hours, but now it is operating at LOS A.  Now that this construction is finally done, traffic flow should be much improved.

 Park Ora/Valmar Road Traffic Signal
The Transportation/Intergovernmental Relations Department is currently finalizing the installation of a traffic signal at Park Ora/Valmar Road.  Currently, the traffic signal poles and mast arms have been installed along with the indicator heads.  The signal will be turned on and fully operational in the weeks ahead.

VEGETATION PERMITTING REQUIREMENTS

Summer means not only hot weather, but also fire danger in Calabasas. Last fall, Southern California witnessed some of the worst fires in recent history.  In order to prevent such disasters from occurring in our own neighborhood this season, please take all steps and necessary precautions to ensure your family’s safety.  Click here for fire safety tips from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Everyone needs to do his or her part to increase fire safety, clearing grasses and shrubs around our residences. The LA Bureau of Street Services in abatement of City-Wide Nuisances, Fire Prevention and Weed Abatement (in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Fire Department) mails notices to property owners regarding clearance requirements, and due dates for performing proper weed abatement.  However, please also contact the Planning Department for local permitting requirements on clearing certain types of vegetation particularly Oak trees and Scrub Oak (shrubs), which are protected under the City’s Municipal Code.  For more information, call (818) 878-4225 and ask for Glenn Michitsch.

SECOND ANNUAL RELAY FOR LIFE

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s National Signature Event, and our community is honoring cancer patients by hosting this special fundraiser on Aug. 21-22.  Teams of at least 10 people will take turns walking, running, or strolling around the track at Calabasas High School for 24 consecutive hours, which symbolizes the difficulty cancer patients face in a single day.  Participants “camp out” with family and friends, and can enjoy music, entertainment, food, and the rewarding feeling left by this experience.  At 9 p.m. on Aug. 21 there will be a candle lighting ceremony where those who won the battle against cancer are honored and those who did not are remembered.  Last year, this event raised over $62,000 for cancer education, advocacy, research and services.  Community service hours are available.  Don’t hesitate to get involved with this important program being held right here in Calabasas.  Contact Karen Rubenstein at (818) 905-7766 and press 3 for more information or click here.

CARPOOL REGISTRATION WEBSITE

Getting your kids to school has just been made easier with the City’s new carpooling data list website.  Now you can set up a carpool through the school district with paper applications that will be sent home to students on their first day of school asking them or their parents to join a carpool list. We have also created a new web-based application available on the Transportation Department’s website at Calabasas Carpool Survey to input the carpool data list information. A carpool proximity list will be made shortly after the beginning of school to give parents and students who drive to school tools to create carpools and reduce traffic on the roads.

ANIMAL CONTROL CODE ENFORCED

Please enjoy the Bark Park during these leisure summer months, but also remember to keep your dog on a leash at all times when you’re out and about in our community and be cautious of rattlesnakes.  The City of Calabasas contracts with the County of Los Angeles for animal control services. You may receive a copy of the Title 10 Animal Control Ordinance of Los Angeles County by coming to Calabasas City Hall.

Please be a considerate pet owner and be sure to follow these two sections of the ordinance:

1.  Dogs shall be kept on a six foot leash or chain when not enclosed within the owner’s property.

2.  Dogs must be cleaned up after when not within the owner’s property.

You may report any sick, injured or animal running loose (domestic or wild) by calling the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Control at (818)991-0071.

WARNING FROM THE CONTRACTORS STATE LICENSE BOARD

Homeowners, please be cautious when deciding to be your own general contractor.  As an “owner/builder,” you (not the person you hire) assume responsibility for the overall job.  If a worker is injured while working on your property, you could be asked to cover the medical costs.  By signing a building permit application as an owner/builder, you must understand that you assume full responsibility for all phases of your project and its integrity.  When you hire a licensed, experienced contractor to confer with knowledgeable tradespersons, the contractor becomes responsible for all phases of construction.  For more information, please contact the Contractors State License Board at (800) 321-CSLB.
