FIRE WATCH

The Simi Valley Wild Fire during the week of October 25, 2003, threatened Box Canyon and Bell Canyon and City of Calabasas was on high alert.  Calabasas Emergency Response Program (CERP) liaison Tom Wheeler kept a close watch and listened for Fire Department updates in the activated Emergency Operation Center at Calabasas City Hall.  Wheeler and other CERP staff had up to the minute news of the fire's location, and mandatory/voluntary evacuations.  With the help of CTV and the website, CERP was able to communicate to the community the latest information, and necessary precautions citizens should take in case of a fire evacuation.  Thankfully the fireman, with the help of shifting winds, saved Calabasas and the local areas from the fire.
This is a good reminder for us all to clear brush around our homes and to have a emergency kit ready.

 LIBRARY GRANT RECEIVED
The New Calabasas Public Library can break ground sooner then expected at its future home, the Calabasas Civic Center on Park Sorrento.  The City of Calabasas received the long anticipated $8.2 million state grant from Sacrsamento on October 28, 2003. Calabasas was one of sixteen recipients of the grant. This funding covers approximately two-thirds of the estimated library building costs.  Construction of the facility is expected to begin sometime next year.  Click here for more information about the Library Grant.

AHMANSON PARTY
The Ahmanson Ranch Victory Celebration was held on October 25, 2003, at the Gate Canyon Park in Calabasas.  Calabasas City Mayor James Bozajian, City Council Members, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and Assemblymember Fran Pavley were all on hand for the ribbon cutting and celebration.  The historic ceremony ended an 18 year battle with land owner Washington Mutual and construction builders who wanted to destroy the open space to develop a community of 3,050 homes, two golf courses and a shopping center. The State of California invested in the 2,900 acre-property land for $150 million. Future plans for the open space are to convert it into public park land that all citizens will share and enjoy for generations to come.

NOVEMBER IS "ADOPT-A-SENIOR-PET MONTH"
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) celebrateS November as Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month. "In the relentless 'busy-ness' of modern life, there aren't enough hours in the day. We have become overscheduled and overwhelmed. This holiday season may be an excellent time to put balance in your life and adopt a senior pet," said the organizations' press release.

Local animal shelters and rescue groups have many loving, healthy senior pets looking for that one special home to cherish them for the rest of their life. And they don't ask for much: just a warm place to sleep, good meals and plenty of love. Puppies and kittens are cute, without a doubt. and they are always the first to be adopted; yet in the same organization, there are wonderful senior pets no less deserving of a happy home. They look hopefully through the wire of their kennels just waiting for a family to welcome them into their home. Senior pets still have plenty to offer not the least of which is love. Senior pets can and do bond very strongly with adopters.

Consider balancing your life and give a deserving senior a second chance. Instead of passing by older pets, stop and spend some time with them you may find the most wonderful companion possible.

TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT UPDATE

The Traffic and Transportation Department’s newly incorporated Comprehensive Vehicle Management Program (CVMP), has been created to address school related traffic problems. CVMP will create ways to reduce traffic in Calabasas. Collaborating with Calabasas schools, the Sheriff’s Department, and the community, the Traffic and Transportation Department hopes to meet the needs of its citizen while keeping traffic free flowing.

CVMP incorporates:

  • Carpool lanes: This proposal is to create a carpool lane at each school, where feasible, to be enforced by each school,  allowing access to cars with 3 or more passengers in them.

  • Subsidize the school bus service: This part of the program proposes to have the City contribute 50% of the parents’ share for the school busses as incentive for students to take the bus to school.

  • Express City shuttles: This aspect of the program proposes buses be located at popular sites such as parks and commercial centers to transport students directly to their school free of charge.

Also, the City Council approved the addition of three full-time traffic officers. The positions include a traffic investigator, motorcycle officer, and a community service assistant (CSA).  The traffic officers will only patrol the streets of Calabasas in order to ensure the safety of our citizens along our city streets. The addition of the officers is part of the Traffic and Transportation’s new Comprehensive Vehicle Management Program.

For more information on CVMP, please contact Robert Yalda in the Traffic and Transportation Department at (818) 878-4225.

Original Sculpture Stolen from Helmet House

“The Ride”, an original bronze sculpture weighing 400 pounds and mounted on a custom-made, four-foot tall concrete and granite pedestal was commissioned by Helmet House to grace the outside of the national distributor’s Calabasas Hills, CA headquarters’ entrance, however the sculpture was stolen on the evening of October 9, 2003.

“The Ride” was among the first projects of the “Art In Public Places” program of the City of Calabasas. It is the work of sculptor Steve Posson and art director Liselotte Bjorck-Posson. Steve is most famous to motorcyclists as the creator of “Glory Days”, the highly regarded theme sculpture that is the centerpiece of the American Motorcyclist Association Museum in Westerville, Ohio.

TALKING TRASH - Rain and Trash are not a Good Combination
October 15th was the official start of the rainy season and with Southern Californians gearing up for the rain, the City of Calabasas is asking its residents to remember basic tips to keep the storm drains clear of trash, litter and debris.  By cleaning up, you are doing your part to help prevent excess pollution that would normally drains into the local creeks and eventually polluting the ocean.
Here are some helpful tips for you to note:  Don’t litter our streets and parks, clean up after your dog, and reduce pesticide and fertilizer use.  To gain a better understanding of the entirety of this problem or to get your questions answered, please call Calabasas Environmental Services Assistant, Robin Hull at (818) 878-4225 ext. 293 or call 1(888) CLEAN-LA.
