HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM THE CITY OF CALABASAS!

William Faulkner: "Gratitude is a quality similar to electricity: it must be produced and discharged and used up in order to exist at all."

Erma Bombeck: "What we're really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?"

Estonian Proverb: "Who does not thank for little will not thank for much."

AHMANSON RANCH CLOSES ESCROW!
Over a decade long battle by the City of Calabasas to preserve the Ahmanson Ranch has officially come to an end!  On November 7, 2003 the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy announced the close of escrow on the Ahmanson Ranch purchase.  A simultaneous transaction with Washington Mutual Bank and the Conservancy's joint powers partner, the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, made the 2,983 acres of Parkland Preserve a reality.

The long-awaited purchase of the Ahmanson Ranch, nestled in Simi Hills on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley, finalized the largest-ever parkland purchase (both in acreage and dollar amount) in the Los Angeles and Ventura County region.  The purchase price was $150 million.

The huge property is part of a critical ecological linkage and wildlife corridor between the Santa Monica Mountains and the ranges to the north.  Now the permanent protection of diverse habitats and endangered species such as the California red-legged frog, the San Fernando Valley spineflower, and the Southwestern willow flycatcher is possible.

Rolling hills studded with valley oaks, sycamore-lined canyon bottoms, miles of potential trails, and vistas of unspoiled California landscapes are part of a parkland legacy.  The ranch encompasses headwaters of Malibu Creek which flows to Santa Monica Bay and supports one of the few populations of Southern steelhead trout.  Historical reports indicate the fish may have traveled unimpeded upstream to streams on the Ahmanson Ranch.

The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority expect to open some initial trails for hikers, equestrians, and bicyclists within weeks, as soon as habitat protections, signage, and some visitor-serving amenities are in place.  MRCA rangers will patrol and manage the parkland, which adjoins the 2500-acre Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space, and National Park Service land in Cheeseboro and Palo Comado Canyons to the west.

The City of Calabasas held a community party to celebrate the Ahmanson Victory on October 25, 2003.  For more information on Ahmanson, please contact the city at (818)878-4225 ext. 284.

HAVE A VERY SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON

This holiday season, don't let the spirit of giving lull you into giving burglars, muggers, and pickpockets a better chance to do their dirty work. Crooks love the holidays as much as everyone else, but chiefly because it's an opportune time for crime.

Homes jam-packed with glittering gifts.  Stores, malls and downtown streets teeming with unsuspecting shoppers.  People rushing around, stressed out and careless, looking for last-minute gifts, trying to get everything done.  It's enough to make a crook giddy with holiday joy.  Click here for some tips on how to celebrate safely this holiday season.

HOLIDAY PARTY AT THE LEONIS ADOBE DECEMBER 14TH

Sunday, December 14th from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, families are invited to the historic Leonis Adobe for carols and refreshments in an 1880's festive setting.

Come home for the holidays at the Leonis Adobe and Plummer House!  The public is invited to experience the holiday season circa 1880's on Sunday, December 14, with carols, decorations and refreshments at the Leonis Adobe Museum.  Throughout the season the Leonis Adobe Museum is displaying how early California families would have celebrated a Victorian-era Christmas.  The Plummer House, built in 1873, will be decorated as an upper middle class family might have celebrated in Hollywood, and the Leonis Adobe will display a rancho Christmas in Calabasas.
