What is this picture?
The new Civic Center site? Undeveloped Ahmanson Ranch land? A foam
party? Actually, this image is adapted from various photos and a
topographic map of Mars taken from space that depicts details of the
planet's ice covered peaks and valleys. The white-capped mountains
are a result of carbon dioxide forming dry ice during the winter on Mars.
This month Mars appears bigger and brighter in the night sky than ever
before in recorded history.

New Civic Center |
|
Plans are underway for
the new civic center project that would relocate Calabasas City Hall on the
Park Sorrento lot across from the library. The City Council is interviewing
architects at their meeting on August 6th. Negotiations are also
underway to create a public/private partnership to acquire the Kilroy
parking lot for retail stores. The plan includes building another
commercial center around City Hall to draw people to the site as a communal
area, rather than one that attracts mainly city officials. For more
information, tune in to the August 6th City Council meeting at 7:30p.m. on
CTV3 or
watch the live webstream
if you don't have cable TV or live outside of Calabasas. |

Expanding Calabasas
Transit in a Clean Way |
|
Now you can
breathe easy because the City of Calabasas has acquired
two new clean burning busses. They will help prevent pollution because
they run on compressed natural gas (CNG). The new busses have
replaced aging shuttles and will be used for several of the
City's transit programs. The City also anticipates acquiring three
additional CNG busses in the coming months and at least one new Trolley
by early 2004. Together, these vehicles will help provide new and expanded
transit services for the residents and patrons of Calabasas. All
of the new bus acquisitions are funded with grant monies from the
Federal Transit Administration and Proposition C funds (local
sales tax funds for transit related uses). For more
information call the City Traffic and Transportation Department at
(818)878-4225. |

UPDATE ON Ahmanson Ranch |
|
After
years of rallying against Washington Mutual’s plan to develop Ahmanson
Ranch, environmentalists may finally see light at the end of the
tunnel. Guy Gniadek, head of the Ahmanson Ranch Project for
Washington Mutual, departed from the company and left the project in
the hands of Dave Murphy. This change has sparked rumors that
Washington Mutual may intend to sell back the land as parkland rather
than go through with development. Ahmanson Ranch is the largest
privately held piece of land in the Santa Monica Mountains, adding up
to 2,800 acres. |

IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE,
IT'S MARS! |
|
During
the month of August, Mars will orbit closer to Earth than ever before
in recorded history. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on
Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars
has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be
as long as 60,000 years. By the end of August, when the
two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its
highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. The encounter will
culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles
and will be the brightest object in the night sky aside from the moon.
Using a telescope at a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full
moon does to the naked eye.
The
next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. For more
information on viewing Mars visit Sky and Telescope Magazine's
Mars at Its All-time Finest. |
