To protect yourself, family and
possessions it is necessary to take steps to become "Fire Wise".
The following in formation is designed to help make your home as
wildfire resistant as possible.
Outside your home:
-
Eliminate the fuel
-
Clear dry brush and leaves as required by local regulations.
-
Use
fire-resistant plants for landscaping.
-
Replace combustible roofing materials with non-combustible ones.
-
Clear all debris from roofs and rain gutters, etc.
-
Remove tree limbs within 6 feet of the ground on trees 18’ high or
taller, to keep ground fires from spreading into the trees.
-
Remove weak, dead or leaning trees.
-
Thin
out heavily wooded areas.
-
Relocate firewood at least 30’ away from structures.
-
Cover chimneys and stovepipes with non-flammable screens, with mesh ¼’
or less.
-
Make sure your house address is clearly visible from the curbside.
-
During fire season, keep an adequate supply of gasoline in your car at
all times, and park your car facing out, in case you need to leave
quickly.
Inside your home:
-
Take time to create an Evacuation Plan. Include escape routes and a
meeting place outside the house. Don’t forget special considerations
may be necessary for those with special needs such as children and
seniors.
-
Create a “Go-Kit” of things you will want to take with you if you must
suddenly evacuate. Include legal documents, a list of valuables,
jewelry, computer files and keepsakes.
-
Pre-plan alternate meeting places away from your neighborhood.
-
Select an out-of-state friend or relative as a contact and information
point for friends and relatives.
-
Keep fire extinguishers at home and teach the family how they are
used.
-
Make sure you have approved smoke detectors at home and replace the
batteries regularly.
Fire
Evacuation:
-
Park
car facing direction of escape with key and evacuation kit.
-
The
Department determines if an EVACUATION WARNING (Voluntary
Evacuation) or EVACUATION ORDER (Mandatory Evacuation) is
necessary. During both phases, Law Enforcement is responsible to
disseminate information, possibly door-to-door or use of bullhorns.
-
The
Community Alert Network system may be activated by the Sheriff or
the City.
