At its August 24 meeting, the City
Council approved in concept the painting of a mural in the
Children's Reading Room in the Library and directed the Library
Commission to select an artist and design for City Council approval.
At the request of Councilmember Gaines, the Library Commission at
their July 18, 2011 meeting discussed the idea of having a mural
painted on the ceiling in the Children's Reading Room. The entire
Commission approved of the concept and a subcommittee consisting of
Commissioners Pangarliotas and Hill was formed and worked with the
Art in Public Places Committee researching muralists from Long
Beach, CA to Seattle, WA. Of the eleven reviewed, the Committee has
narrowed it to five artists who will be submitting proposals and
renderings by August 16th.
The Library Commission believes that the mural will enhance the
Library by continuing to bring meaningful artworks to the community.
The Committee is also recommending that the artist's preliminary
renderings be posted on the City's website to allow citizen input on
the selection.
The following renderings are those
of the five finalists in the selection of a muralist for that room.
These are preliminary renderings so
the final product will look somewhat different than those depicted
here - some changes of colors, placements of trees and animals, etc.
The Library Commission will be
addressing this issue at their meeting on October 17 2011 at 6:30 p.m.
in Council Chambers. If you wish to speak on this matter, please
attend that meeting.
