The office of
John Chiang, Chair of the
State Board of Equalization and Member of the Franchise Tax Board, would
like to alert you to a program offered by the state of California, called
Homeowner and Renters Assistance.
This program may allow you to receive a
once-a-year payment, up to $472.60, based on a portion of your property
taxes paid in 2004 or a payment, up to $347.50, based on property taxes paid
indirectly through rent payments made in 2004.

In order to qualify, as
of December 31, 2004, you must: |
Have been
over 62 years of age, blind, or disabled
|
Have owned and lived in your own
home or paid over $50 in rent per month
|
Have had a
total household income of $39,699 or less AND Have been a U.S. citizen,
or a designated or qualified alien.
For
individuals who owned a business or rental property,
gross household income cannot exceed
$72,179 in 2004, including all non-cash business
expenses such as depreciation, amortization
and depletion. |
Mr. Chiang's office in downtown
Los Angeles will provide free preparation of these claims from
now until June 30, 2006, the deadline for filing a claim.
However, those interested are encouraged to file a claim as soon
as possible since funding for this program is limited.
In
addition to the claim preparation assistance available at John
Chiang’s office, the Franchise Tax Board has other volunteer
sites throughout Los Angeles County that will be able to provide
help. Individuals wanting further information on the Homeowner
and Renter Assistance Program can call the Franchise Tax Board

Taxpayers who wish to obtain homeowner or renter assistance
claim assistance from John Chiang’s Office should call (213)
239-8506 to schedule an appointment. The office is located at
660 South Figueroa Street, Suite 2050, Los Angeles, CA 90017,
and is wheelchair accessible.
